Rapper Gucci Mane recently sat down with “The Breakfast Club” and shared some deeply personal insights into his struggles with schizophrenia and how some friends took advantage of him during his episodes. It’s a candid look at the challenges faced when dealing with mental health issues, especially under the public eye.
Friends Exploiting Mental Health Episodes
Gucci Mane recounted instances where friends would exploit his mental health episodes, particularly when he was experiencing highs that led him to gift expensive items. He drew a parallel to Kim Kardashian’s comments about Kanye West giving away cars during his episodes, admitting a similar pattern occurred in his own life.
He shared, “I gave away jewelry. Jewelry costs so much, I would give my friends jewelry. They knew I wasn’t well, but they’d take it. They know something going on with me, but they’d take it.” This admission sheds light on the difficult reality of navigating relationships when mental health is compromised and others choose to capitalize on vulnerability.
Keyshia Ka’oir’s System for Support
Gucci Mane’s wife, Keyshia Ka’oir, also shared details about how she actively manages his mental health. She described having a “system” in place, which includes removing social media apps from his phone and changing passwords to prevent public knowledge of his episodes. “I control everything at home,” she stated, emphasizing her proactive approach to catching episodes before they escalate.
Her dedication seems to have made a significant difference, as Gucci noted he hasn’t had another public episode since September 13th, thanks to her management. This highlights the crucial role of supportive partners and caregivers in managing mental health conditions.
Memoir and Music Reflecting His Journey
Gucci Mane’s experiences with schizophrenia are further detailed in his new memoir, “Episodes,” released earlier this month. Coinciding with the book’s release, he also dropped his 17th studio album, also titled “Episodes.” These projects offer a deeper dive into his personal journey and resilience.
