History has been made! Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, the first Greek-letter organization established by African American women, has officially chartered its very first chapter in Puerto Rico. This groundbreaking move marks the sorority’s expansion into a Latin American region where Spanish is the primary language, further solidifying its global presence.
Introducing the Alpha Delta Nu Omega Chapter
On Saturday, October 18th, 25 dedicated sorority members officially formed the Alpha Delta Nu Omega chapter. These women represent a diverse range of professional fields, including medicine, business, education, and law, all united by their commitment to service. This charter is the culmination of two years of dedicated service and community work, primarily focused on the Loíza community in Puerto Rico, an area celebrated for its rich Afro-Puerto Rican culture and heritage.
A Milestone for Service and Sisterhood
Carrie J. Clark, the international regional director, expressed her excitement about this milestone. “We are thrilled to bring Alpha Kappa Alpha to Puerto Rico,” she stated. “These women are dedicated to Puerto Rico and Loíza. They have already made a significant impact on women, children, and families on the island, and that work will continue and expand in the years to come.”
The members of the new chapter have already been actively involved in supporting the community. Their initiatives include assisting families in crisis, delivering toys to children in domestic violence shelters, providing health screenings for seniors, and offering vital career and educational resources to youth, women, and others in need. This expansion allows them to amplify their impact even further.
Expanding a Global Legacy
The establishment of the Alpha Delta Nu Omega chapter in Puerto Rico follows the recent chartering of the Alpha Delta Alpha Omega Chapter in London in May. With this addition, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. now has a presence in 14 countries and territories worldwide. This international expansion is part of their ongoing commitment to service, which includes launching initiatives like For Members Only Federal Credit Union, the first Black-owned, women-led, sorority-based digital banking institution in the U.S.
Internationally, the sorority has a history of impactful work, from reducing poverty in sub-Saharan Africa to building schools in post-apartheid South Africa. Most recently, members of the International Region participated in service projects in Liberia aimed at improving the lives of underserved women and children. The new Puerto Rico chapter’s first service project will focus on assembling Childhood Hunger Power Packs (AKA CHIPPTM) for students and creating hurricane preparedness kits, aligning with the International Region’s broader goals.
