Nia Long & Larenz Tate Reunite for Netflix Romance

Get ready for another dose of Black love! Nia Long and Larenz Tate, the iconic duo who captured our hearts in the 1997 cult classic “Love Jones,” are reuniting for a new romantic drama on Netflix. This highly anticipated project is reportedly inspired by the smooth, soulful sounds of Maxwell’s groundbreaking debut album, “Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite.”

A New Chapter Inspired by a Classic Album

Netflix officially greenlit the untitled film, which will be directed by Eugene Ashe, known for his swoon-worthy Black romance “Sylvie’s Love.” While the plot details are being kept under wraps, the inspiration from Maxwell’s 1996 album suggests a story that delves deep into the passionate beginnings and potential heart-wrenching endings of a romance, drawing from real-life experiences.

Fans are already buzzing with anticipation, wondering if the film will echo the themes of “Urban Hang Suite” or simply channel that unmistakable ’90s Black love aesthetic that “Love Jones” so perfectly embodied. The album itself tells a compelling story of a relationship’s journey, promising a potentially slow-burn, soul-filled cinematic experience.

Behind the Scenes Talent

The creative team behind this project is stacked with talent. Kay Oyegun, a writer-producer from the emotionally resonant series “This Is Us,” penned the script. Maxwell himself is reportedly serving as an executive producer, alongside John D. Hammond, Nia Long, and Larenz Tate. Macro Film Studios’ James Lopez, Charles D. King, and Poppy Hanks are also producing.

Long and Tate have shared the screen a few times since “Love Jones,” including a Walmart holiday commercial and the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic “Michael.” However, this marks their first leading romantic feature together in years, a reunion that has social media users incredibly excited.

The Spark Lives On

Reflecting on their initial chemistry for “Love Jones,” Larenz Tate told Entertainment Weekly in 2021, “Immediately, we just kind of had a nice little spark and a connection and it just felt natural.” It seems that undeniable spark has never left, and with Maxwell’s iconic music setting the mood, we might just be falling in love all over again.
