MTV UK Music Channels Closing Down

Get ready for a major shift in the U.K. music television landscape! After nearly four decades of shaping pop culture and introducing generations to new artists, MTV is set to close five of its dedicated music channels in the United Kingdom. This news has sparked questions about the future of the iconic brand, but don’t worry, MTV isn’t disappearing entirely.

Which MTV Channels Are Closing?

As reported by E! News, the channels slated for closure on December 31, 2025, include MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live. While these channels focused on specific music eras and genres, the main MTV HD channel will continue broadcasting.

Why the Change? The Evolution of Music Consumption

The decision to close these music-centric channels reflects a significant evolution in how people consume music. In today’s digital age, platforms like YouTube and various social media channels have become the go-to destinations for discovering artists and watching music videos. This shift has naturally led to declining viewership for traditional music television.

For context, in July 2025, MTV Music was averaging around 1.3 million viewers, while MTV 90s had approximately 949,000 viewers. These numbers, while substantial, highlight the changing media habits of audiences compared to the network’s heyday.

Paramount Global’s Restructuring

Adding to these changes, MTV’s parent company, Paramount Global, is currently undergoing a major restructuring following its merger with Skydance Media. Variety reported in August 2024 that the company plans to cut approximately $500 million in global expenses, which includes significant layoffs affecting around 2,000 positions.

MTV HD: A New Focus on Reality

While the music channels are signing off, MTV HD will continue to be available in the U.K. However, its programming focus is shifting. According to the BBC, the main channel will primarily feature reality television shows, such as “Geordie Shore” and “Naked Dating UK.” This isn’t entirely new, as MTV UK had already moved away from music video programming in 2011, leaning more into unscripted series.

We need to support these artists and we all need to dance again and listen to music. …MTV was the place where everything came together. — Simone Angel, Former MTV Video Jockey

The closure of these dedicated music channels undoubtedly marks the end of an era for many fans who grew up with MTV as their primary source for music discovery. It’s a testament to how rapidly the media landscape is changing.
