ICE Agents Tackle Black Teen Amid Excessive Force Concerns

A disturbing incident in Chicago has brought renewed attention to concerns about excessive force by federal agents. Video footage shows multiple ICE agents tackling a 19-year-old Black man, Warren King, outside a Walgreens, while he repeatedly shouts, “I’m a US citizen!” This event adds to a troubling pattern of alleged excessive force and wrongful arrests involving Black teens in the Chicago area.

An Alleged Case of Mistaken Identity

The incident occurred on Tuesday, October 14th, when agents entered the Walgreens where King was reportedly shopping with friends and family. Shortly after, King was seen being chased and tackled to the ground outside the store. As an agent pinned him, King’s cries of “I’m a US citizen!” were heard, with loved ones corroborating his claim. The agent responded aggressively, telling bystanders to “get the *** back.”

King recounted to ABC 7 that the agents seemed to be searching for someone inside the store. He decided to leave when he heard them calling for backup. Despite his repeated assertions of being a U.S. citizen, born and raised, the agents did not seem to listen. King was ultimately released after hours in an agent’s car, left with both physical and mental scars.

Department of Homeland Security’s Account

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) provided a different account of the events. According to ABC7, DHS stated the incident followed a 30-minute pursuit of an “allegedly undocumented driver” involved in a collision with border patrol agents. DHS claims that once the vehicle was stopped, the suspects, identified as “illegal aliens,” attempted to flee on foot. They further stated that a crowd began to form as Border Patrol arrested the subjects and secured the scene.

A Pattern of Concern in Chicago

This incident is not isolated. The same morning, as protesters gathered near the collision site, a 15-year-old Black and Hispanic boy was reportedly tackled, kneed in the back, and restrained with zip ties by Border Patrol agents. Attorneys from the Romanucci and Blandin law firm reported that the teen was taken to a federal facility, handcuffed for hours, denied his rights, and his mother was unaware of his whereabouts. Attorney Antonio M. Romanucci condemned the actions, drawing parallels to authoritarian regimes and the Ku Klux Klan.

DHS, however, stated the 15-year-old was arrested for allegedly throwing eggs at an ICE agent. He was taken to the FBI Field Office, admitted to throwing eggs without questioning, met with his attorney, and was released without charges. A DHS spokesperson conveyed a message from Secretary Kristi Noem: “you will not stop us or slow us down.”

Vigilance and Knowing Your Rights

With federal agents increasingly present in cities like Chicago, Governor JB Pritzker voiced his concerns, stating, “ICE is an out-of-control danger to our peaceful communities.” As the Trump administration continues its push for federal intervention in cities, it is crucial for residents to remain vigilant, educate themselves on their rights, and foster communication within their communities, echoing advice previously given by Vic Mensa.
