Busta Rhymes is firing back at his former assistant, Dashiel Gables, who previously sued the rapper for assault and wage violations. Rhymes has now filed a countersuit, alleging that Gables’ lawsuit has significantly damaged his reputation and standing in the music and advertising industries.
Allegations of Defamation and False Claims
In his countersuit, Busta Rhymes (born Trevor George Smith Jr.) vehemently denies the assault claims. His legal team argues that Gables knowingly made false statements or acted with reckless disregard for the truth. “Gables knew the statements were false, or acted with reckless disregard for the truth, including by fabricating allegations of criminal conduct and violence, omitting exculpatory facts and deliberately ignoring contrary evidence,” the lawsuit states.
Rhymes’ legal team further contends that Gables acted negligently in verifying the truth of his claims. This countersuit aims to clear the rapper’s name and hold Gables accountable for what Rhymes’ camp describes as fabricated allegations.
Details of the Original Lawsuit
According to the original court documents filed by Gables, the dispute allegedly began when he attempted to use his phone. Gables claims Rhymes reacted by yelling, “Stay the f— off your phone,” and then punching him twice, resulting in a swollen eye. Gables stated he sought medical attention and filed a police report following the alleged incident.
Further Accusations and Denials
Gables’ complaint also included accusations of ongoing verbal abuse, with claims that Rhymes routinely demeaned him, used homophobic slurs, and mocked his hearing loss. The suit further alleged that Smith threatened him with “street justice.” Additional claims against the rapper included spitting on staff, striking them, and grabbing their clothing.
Beyond the personal allegations, Gables accused Smith of denying him proper pay, wage statements, and other protections mandated by federal and New York labor laws. He sought damages for unpaid wages, industry blacklisting, and emotional and financial harm.
Impact on Busta Rhymes’ Career
Busta Rhymes asserts that the allegations from Gables have led to significant professional losses. He claims to have lost “advertising campaigns and other business opportunities.” Consequently, Rhymes is seeking “special damages in an amount to be proven at trial,” arguing that Gables’ actions were “willful, wanton, and malicious,” thus warranting punitive damages.
