Luxury makeup is having a major moment, but it’s not just coming from the usual suspects. Enter AORA MÉXICO, a vibrant makeup brand born in Mexico that’s challenging the industry with its commitment to sustainable, premium products. Founded by L’Oréal veteran Nour Tayar, AORA is redefining what luxury and sustainability can look like in the beauty world.
Vibrant Culture Meets Eco-Conscious Design
AORA’s initial launch made waves with a collection of lip and eye makeup housed in completely plastic-free and recyclable packaging. This eco-conscious approach is central to the brand’s ethos. But AORA isn’t just about sustainability; it’s also about celebrating the richness of Mexican culture.
In a beauty landscape often dominated by neutral tones, AORA injects the vibrancy of Mexico into every product. Their signature eyeshadow palette boasts a stunning rainbow of colors like violet, emerald, and cobalt blue, presented in an equally eye-catching gold tin. The eyeliners offer similar bold yet wearable shades, and their lip serum balms include a pH-adjusting pink and a spicy red plumper.
The Meaning Behind the Name: ‘Ahora’
The brand’s name, AORA MÉXICO, is deeply intentional. “AORA comes from ‘ahora,’ which is Spanish for ‘now,’” explains founder Nour Tayar. “It represented exactly what the brand is about: colorful, vibrant, clean, and sustainable. It’s everything we want to see in the beauty industry, and it’s what we’re bringing right now.” Removing the ‘h’ creates a unique shape, reminiscent of a pyramid, a significant symbol in Mexican heritage.
Tayar emphasizes that AORA was born to challenge the industry’s Eurocentric focus and to celebrate Mexico’s unique aesthetic. “Color is also a BIG part of Mexico. Here, color isn’t forced. It’s not so much about whether the shades go together as it is an expression of art. We wanted AORA to celebrate and showcase that kind of joy,” she shares. This bold, colorful approach is a deliberate departure from the minimalist trends that have dominated recently.
Sustainable Luxury in Packaging
Sustainability is woven into the fabric of AORA. “With the packaging, we knew it had to be 100% plastic-free and 100% recyclable,” Tayar states. Creating plastic-free pencil packaging, for instance, was a challenge but crucial to the brand’s mission. They aimed to revive the feeling of luxurious, keepsake packaging that was common before the prevalence of plastic.
The design aesthetic, inspired by the pyramid shape and the color of a 10-peso coin, adds another layer of cultural significance. “The pyramid plays a large role in the aesthetic of our brand, so it was important to translate that through the packaging,” Tayar notes.
The Bright Future of Mexican Beauty
Tayar believes Mexican beauty has a vital place on the global stage due to its inherent diversity. “The cities, people, and cultures bring something fresh to beauty outside of what we’re already seeing from European brands,” she explains. AORA aims to transport consumers to the “magical world of Mexico” through texture, storytelling, and imagery, defining true luxury.
Looking ahead, Tayar sees a future where sustainability and luxury are not mutually exclusive. “Sustainability is the only way to move forward, and we have to make it sexy and flavorful,” she asserts. “Why can’t you be a clean makeup brand that’s also glamorous?” AORA MÉXICO is proving that you absolutely can.
