Teyana Taylor, known for her multifaceted talents as a singer, actress, and creative director, is adding another skill to her impressive repertoire: chef! She’s recently enrolled in culinary school, and she’s finding the experience to be incredibly rewarding and, as she puts it, “very therapeutic.”
A Passion Turned Purpose
Taylor shared her excitement about heading to class, complete with her uniform and chef’s hat, telling Marie Claire, “It’s always been a passion of mine. I’ve always loved to cook. It’s been very therapeutic for me.” With a demanding career and two young daughters, Junie and Rue, Taylor sees this pursuit as a vital act of self-care. “I don’t have the time to do it, but I have the time to show up for me,” she explained. “It’s ‘work’ in the best way because it’s something that you’re doing for you. It’s a passion that you’re turning into purpose.”
She announced her enrollment on Instagram back in July, sharing a playful video and caption about her lifelong love for cooking. Taylor fondly recalled her childhood nickname, the “Hood Betty Crocker,” for baking treats for friends and neighbors in Harlem. She mentioned being inspired by the “amazing women in my life” who cooked with “so much love and joy.”
Finding Comfort in the Kitchen
Taylor emphasized that the kitchen has always been a “safe space” for her, even amidst life’s challenges and her busy career. Pursuing a degree in Culinary Arts & Pastry Arts was a long-held goal, but her demanding schedule often put it on hold. “Honestly finding my way back and going to school at this time is important because it’s the time where I get to show up for me,” she stated.
She finds comfort in the rhythm of cooking – the chopping, the stirring, the creating – which helps her navigate the hectic pace of life. This culinary journey is not only a personal passion but also a way to continue a family legacy rooted in the joy of cooking and baking.
