NBCUniversal Offers Severance to Remote Workers

The debate around returning to the office continues, and NBCUniversal is making a firm decision. The company is requiring its hybrid employees to come back to the office four days a week, starting January 5, 2026. For those who prefer to remain fully remote, NBCUniversal is offering severance packages.

A New Policy for In-Office Collaboration

According to a memo obtained by Deadline from Chief Operating Officer Adam Miller, the new policy designates Fridays as the only remote work day for hybrid employees. Miller emphasized the company’s belief that “in-person work and collaboration spark innovation, promote creativity, and build stronger connections.”

For employees who find this new arrangement unworkable, NBCUniversal has introduced a “voluntary exit assistance package.” Those who choose not to comply with the new in-office mandate must notify their HR manager by October 3. This package includes eight weeks of base salary and three months of continued healthcare benefits (medical, dental, and vision).

Severance Details and Exclusions

Employees opting for the severance package will also remain eligible for their full bonus, provided they are on the payroll through December 31 and assist in transitioning their duties. This policy applies to U.S. and U.K.-based hybrid employees at the vice president level and below. However, employees in divisions affected by an upcoming spin-off of NBCU’s cable networks, such as MSNBC and CNBC, are excluded from this mandate and the severance offer.

This move by NBCUniversal follows a broader trend of companies encouraging or mandating a return to physical workspaces after the widespread shift to remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic. NBCUniversal’s parent company, Comcast, implemented similar demands for its workforce in 2023.

Balancing Flexibility and In-Office Culture

As businesses navigate the complexities of balancing the perceived benefits of in-person work with employee desires for flexibility, NBCUniversal’s policy is likely to be closely watched. Employees have a few months to weigh their options and decide how to respond to these new employment terms.
