Mutayo Ekiye: Nigerian Designer Crafting Global Luxury

In the wake of the pandemic, many creatives found a renewed sense of purpose, and designer Mutayo Ekiye is no exception. What began as a hobby—sketching handbags during lockdown—blossomed into a full-fledged luxury brand, Mutayo Ekiye. Driven by a passion for design and a deep connection to her Nigerian heritage, Ekiye is crafting pieces that tell a story and aim to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with established global luxury houses.

From Texas to Nigeria: A Creative Journey

Born in Austin, Texas, to entrepreneurial parents, Ekiye’s early life was marked by creativity. Her family’s relocation to Nigeria during her formative years exposed her to a rich cultural environment. Growing up in Port Harcourt and Lagos, with ancestral ties to the Ekpeye community in Rivers State, Ekiye found a creative sanctuary in drawing, painting, and designing. Her aunt’s tailoring shop further nurtured her skills, leading her to sew clothes for dolls and craft miniature accessories, solidifying her lifelong love for design and craftsmanship.

Returning to the U.S. for high school, Ekiye navigated the adjustments of moving between cultures, which ultimately expanded her worldview. This blend of experiences now deeply informs her design philosophy. “Each collection is a love letter to Africa, but also an invitation for the world to embrace its artistry,” Mutayo explains.

Highlighting Nigerian Craftsmanship and Heritage

Ekiye’s vision for her brand is ambitious: to become a globally recognized luxury name, unapologetically rooted in Africa. She aims to change the narrative surrounding Nigeria’s significant leather industry, which quietly fuels global luxury brands without receiving due recognition. Ekiye wants Mutayo Ekiye to be a bridge, celebrating African heritage with the sophistication seen in brands like Chanel and Dior. Her bags often feature signature sculptural curves and the ‘Oma’ hardware, inspired by the profile of a beautiful African woman, weaving culture directly into the design.

While Ekiye admires the precision of Italian craftsmanship and initially produced her collections in Italy due to its legacy, her ultimate goal is to establish a production line within Nigeria. The challenge lies in finding manufacturing partners who meet her high standards for luxury goods, a journey she is actively pursuing.

The Philosophy Behind the Designs

The shapes and colors of Ekiye’s bags are deeply inspired by Nigeria itself, particularly Nigerian women. Her silhouettes echo the strength and elegance of traditional Nigerian attire, featuring bold structures and distinctively feminine curves. The vibrant colors found in cultural garments like aso-oke and coral beads are also reflected in her designs, celebrating Africa’s unique aesthetic.

Ekiye’s biggest challenge as a designer and entrepreneur has been navigating the complexities of building a luxury brand from the ground up, from sourcing materials to managing publicity. She is inspired by the growing global demand for Afrocentric luxury fashion, seeing it not as a trend but as a movement, and is honored to be part of it.
