Dawn Staley on Knicks Coaching Job

Legendary South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley recently shared that she would have enthusiastically accepted the head coaching position for the New York Knicks, had the offer been made. Staley, a Hall of Famer with multiple NCAA championships, believes she was ready to make history as the first female head coach in the NBA.

A Missed Opportunity for the Knicks

During an appearance on the Post Moves podcast with WNBA stars Aliyah Boston and Candace Parker, Staley expressed her strong desire for the role. “I would have had to do it. Not just for me. For women,” Staley stated, emphasizing the significance of the opportunity. “It’s the New York Knicks. I’m from Philly. But it’s the freaking New York Knicks.”

The Knicks ultimately hired Mike Brown to replace Tom Thibodeau, who was let go despite leading the team to the Eastern Conference finals. Many felt the franchise missed a major opportunity to break barriers by not offering the position to Staley, who boasts an impressive coaching record of 647-190, including nine SEC titles and three NCAA championships with the Gamecocks.

Reflections on the Interview Process

Staley reflected on her interview with the Knicks, acknowledging that she might have overemphasized the historical implications of her potential hiring. She recalled asking Knicks officials how her being the first female NBA head coach would impact her daily job, anticipating increased media scrutiny and unique challenges.

“You’re going to be asked questions that you don’t have to answer if you’re a male coach,” Staley explained. “I felt the energy change after that. So, I shot myself in the foot by … being inquisitive and asking all those darn questions.”

Staley’s Continued Success

Despite not getting the NBA job, Staley continues to be a dominant force in women’s college basketball. Her coaching prowess and leadership have made the South Carolina Gamecocks a powerhouse program. Her candid remarks highlight the ongoing challenges and biases that women in sports leadership positions often face.
