United Airlines’ ‘Wings On The Spectrum’ Event

Navigating the airport can be a whirlwind for anyone, but for families with children who have invisible disabilities, it can present unique challenges. That’s why United Airlines is stepping up with a special event designed to make the travel experience smoother and less stressful for everyone involved.

On October 18th, Los Angeles International Airport’s Terminal 7 will host “Wings On The Spectrum,” a unique trial travel day. This initiative aims to give children on the neurodivergent spectrum a chance to practice the entire airport and boarding process in a supportive environment, long before their actual flight.

A Rehearsal for the Skies

This isn’t just a tour; it’s a full rehearsal! Families will have the opportunity to go through security, check-in, and boarding procedures without the pressure of a real flight. It’s a fantastic way for kids to become familiar with the sights, sounds, and steps involved in air travel, helping to build confidence and reduce anxiety.

Former athlete and autism advocate Stacy McAlister recently shared his positive experience at a similar past event. He described it as a “one-of-a-kind experience” that allows children and their guardians to explore the airport and grow more comfortable with the entire air travel process.

Supporting Inclusion and Accessibility

McAlister’s nonprofit, 5-Eleven Hoops, focuses on providing opportunities for children with autism and other disabilities through basketball clinics, fostering coordination, social skills, and sportsmanship. This aligns perfectly with United’s commitment to creating a more inclusive travel experience.

United Airlines has also been expanding its Special Olympics Service Ambassador (SOSA) program. This program aims to create employment opportunities for individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities, with SOSA employees assisting travelers at several U.S. hubs. It’s a testament to their dedication to making travel accessible for everyone.

How to Participate

Spots for the October 18th “Wings On The Spectrum” event are limited, so interested families should register quickly. You’ll need to complete individual registration forms for each member of your party, which includes providing basic information and noting any special medical accommodations needed.

This initiative by United Airlines is a wonderful step towards making air travel more accessible and less daunting for children with invisible disabilities and their families. It’s a thoughtful approach that truly prioritizes passenger comfort and experience.
