Drake, a dominant force in the music industry, has often found himself on the receiving end of the “culture vulture” label. In a recent candid conversation, the rapper admitted that this particular criticism does get under his skin.
Drake’s Perspective on the Label
Speaking with Bobbi Althoff, Drake shared his feelings about the accusation. “What I’m really trying to say is I feel like I’m not necessarily part of the problem and I experience a lot of guilt-tripping in my life where people are like, ‘No, this is your fault,’ essentially and my intentions are pure,” he explained.
He feels that his collaborative efforts and the way he has supported and amplified other artists are often misconstrued. “They’ll put a negative spin on it and try and tell me that it’s a self-serving thing or whatever, and I think I get really sensitive about that.”
Criticism from Peers and Critics
The “culture vulture” accusation isn’t new for Drake. He’s faced similar criticism from various figures in the music scene. Notably, Kendrick Lamar’s diss track “Not Like Us” referred to Drake as a “colonizer.”
Back in 2019, UK Grime artist Wiley also accused Drake of taking from the genre without properly crediting its originators. More recently, Ebro Darden of Hot 97 referred to Drake as a “sickness” in the rap game, suggesting his influence could be detrimental.
These instances highlight a recurring theme in discussions surrounding Drake’s career: the balance between influence, collaboration, and appropriation. Drake’s admission of sensitivity suggests he’s aware of the conversation and its impact.
