Get ready for a fascinating glimpse into the past! Archaeologists in Egypt have made an incredible discovery: two churches that are over 1,600 years old. Found in the Kharga Oasis, an ancient area about 350 miles southwest of Cairo, these churches offer a direct connection to Egypt’s early Christian history.
Unearthing Ancient Christian Sites
The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities announced that archaeologists unearthed these churches in July. The site also yielded numerous other ancient Christian remains, including cemeteries and more churches, painting a vivid picture of a thriving early Christian community. Even residential buildings made of mudbrick, with some walls still showing plaster, were found.
Both churches date back to the early Coptic era, the period when Christianity began to take root in Egypt, starting in the 4th century A.D. One of the discovered buildings is a grand mudbrick basilica, featuring the remnants of a large hall and two aisles. The other, smaller church has a rectangular layout and was surrounded by the remains of seven external columns.
A City Through Multiple Eras
Dr. Siham Ismail, the general director of External Archaeological Archives and Head of the Mission, led the discovery. Her team from the Supreme Council of Antiquities found that the buildings at the site indicate the area was utilized across several historical periods. They discovered that structures from the Roman era were later reused during the early Coptic period and even into the Islamic era.
The mission also unearthed the remains of the main residential city of the Outdoors Oasis. This area was particularly significant as it witnessed the transition from paganism to Christianity. It’s amazing to think about the layers of history present in one location!
Among the most compelling finds was a mural depicting Jesus Christ healing the sick. This artwork offers a powerful visual insight into the religious beliefs and practices of the time. It’s discoveries like these that truly bring history to life.
