Army Football Player Saves Man from Burning Car

In a truly heroic act, Army football player Larry Pickett Jr. risked his own life to save a man trapped in a burning car in Fort Montgomery, New York. The incident occurred while Pickett, a sophomore safety for the Army Black Knights, was traveling with his family.

A Moment of Crisis

While driving back from dinner, Pickett and his family encountered a terrifying scene: a car crash on Route 9W. The vehicle was already smoking, and downed power lines surrounded the wreckage, indicating immediate danger. Without a second thought, Pickett, along with his father, Larry Pickett Sr., sprang into action.

They worked together to pry open the car doors and successfully pulled the trapped man to safety. Moments later, the car was completely engulfed in flames. “There was no discussion. My son just jumped right into action,” Pickett Sr. told ABC11, highlighting his son’s immediate response.

Training and Family Values in Action

Pickett’s father believes his son’s composure and decisive action were a direct result of his military training at West Point. “He mentioned his military training kicked in, and we pulled him out. He took care of him on the side of the road until the police officers got there,” Pickett Sr. explained. This incident underscores the values of duty and selflessness instilled through Army training.

The Secretary of the Army also recognized Pickett’s bravery, posting on Facebook: “Cadet Larry Pickett Jr. … pulled a man from a burning vehicle-an act of extraordinary courage and selflessness. This young leader embodies the highest values of the Army and West Point: duty, honor, country.” His actions serve as an inspiring example of resilience and commitment to helping others, whether on the football field or in a critical emergency.
