After a demanding summer, I found myself in desperate need of a getaway. Luckily, the opportunity to visit Jamaica arrived just in time for Independence Day celebrations, and my stay at the new Sandals Dunn’s River was the perfect prescription for relaxation and rejuvenation. This resort, which opened in 2023 on Jamaica’s north coast, offers a unique blend of the brand’s signature all-inclusive luxury with an authentic taste of the island’s soul.
Sandals 2.0: Authentically Jamaican
While I’ve enjoyed Sandals properties before, Sandals Dunn’s River feels like a new chapter for the brand, dubbed “Sandals 2.0.” The focus here is on bringing the “Made of Caribbean” roots to the forefront. From the moment I arrived, the resort exuded an authentic Jamaican vibe that felt genuine, not performative – a crucial element for me, as I often shy away from typical all-inclusive experiences. Sandals, however, has always held a special place in my heart, and this new property only solidified that.
My stay in the Tufa Terrace Skypool Butler Suite was exceptional. Having two female butlers coordinating dinner reservations, arranging activities, and ensuring my favorite drinks were readily available poolside was incredibly refreshing. It truly eliminates decision fatigue, allowing for a seamless and stress-free vacation. The resort boasts 10 new restaurants, offering global flavors, but the standout is the “Island Inclusive” dining program, which takes guests off-property to savor local Jamaican cuisine.
Experiencing Jamaica Beyond the Resort
I believe in experiencing a destination beyond its resort boundaries, and Sandals Dunn’s River facilitates this perfectly. The “Island Inclusive” program makes the resort feel less like a bubble and more like a genuine Jamaican experience. During my visit, I enjoyed the usual Sandals perks like unlimited sports and PADI-certified scuba diving, along with on-site Blue Mountain coffee tastings. A highlight was visiting the iconic Dunn’s River Falls with the nearby tour operator, Island Routes.
The celebration of Jamaican Independence Day during my stay was unforgettable. The resort pulled out all the stops with live music and an expansive outdoor buffet featuring incredible authentic Caribbean food. Witnessing guests and staff celebrate together created a wonderful sense of community, something often missing in resort settings. Evenings were spent at the Dunn’s Rum Club, my nightly go-to for craft cocktails made with local ingredients like coconut and sorrel-smoked rum, alongside traditional bar snacks and Jamaican-style dominoes.
A Harmonious Blend of Luxury and Culture
Dining at the resort’s restaurants, like Banyu (Asian fusion) and Cascata (Italian), offered diverse culinary journeys. Banyu provided a solid range of Asian flavors, while Cascata offered a romantic atmosphere with authentic Italian fare. What truly impressed me about Sandals Dunn’s River is how all these elements harmoniously combine to create an experience that is both luxurious and deeply connected to Jamaica. This resort couldn’t exist anywhere else, and that’s its greatest strength. For couples seeking a romantic escape with authentic cultural immersion, Sandals Dunn’s River delivers the brand’s promise with an elevated level of authenticity.
