Emma Heming Willis, wife of the beloved actor Bruce Willis, has shared a poignant update on his health as he continues to navigate his frontotemporal dementia (FTD) diagnosis. In a recent interview, she revealed that the actor, known for his iconic roles, is now living in a “second home” with full-time care, emphasizing that while his overall health is good, his brain is experiencing decline.
A Difficult Journey with Dementia
The family first shared Willis’s diagnosis of aphasia and FTD in March 2022, a condition that affects language and communication. Heming Willis has been a vocal advocate, sharing the challenges of caregiving. In September 2023, she described the experience as “hard,” and her latest update, shared ahead of her book ‘The Unexpected Journey’ and a related Hulu/Disney+ show, offers further insight into their reality.
Speaking with Diane Sawyer, Heming Willis expressed a deep desire for connection with her husband. “I would really love to know that. If he’s scared. If he’s ever worried. I just would love to be able to just to have a conversation with him,” she shared, highlighting the emotional toll of the disease.
Adapting to New Forms of Connection
Despite the challenges with language, Heming Willis emphasized that the family has found new ways to communicate and maintain a connection with Bruce. “The language is going, and we’ve learned to adapt. And we have a way of communicating with him, which is just a different way,” she explained. “He’s holding our hands. We’re kissing him. We’re hugging him. That’s all I need, you know?”
She added that while she doesn’t need him to remember specific details like their anniversary, the emotional connection remains paramount. “I just wanna feel that I have a connection with him. And I do.” Bruce Willis and Emma Heming married in March 2009 and share two daughters, Mabel and Evelyn, who join Willis’s three older daughters from his previous marriage to Demi Moore: Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah.
Heming Willis’s candidness offers a glimpse into the realities of living with FTD, underscoring the importance of love, adaptation, and connection in the face of such a challenging diagnosis.
