Even NBA legends can have their credit cards declined! Shaquille O’Neal, known for his larger-than-life personality and immense success, shared a memorable story about a time his $70,000 purchase at Walmart was initially declined. The incident happened around the 2007-2008 NBA season when Shaq was traded from the Miami Heat to the Phoenix Suns.
A $70,000 Walmart Shopping Spree
Upon arriving in Phoenix and settling into his new, unfurnished apartment, Shaq, known for his lack of patience, decided to head straight to Walmart to furnish his new place. He claimed this was the largest purchase in Walmart history at the time. As the cashier began ringing up the massive haul, Shaq handed over his credit card, but it was declined not once, but twice.
“So I put my card in it, and it declined. Then, pulled it out, put it again, and it declined again,” Shaq recounted to James Corden on “The Late Late Show” over seven years ago. Bewildered by the repeated declines, he told the staff he’d be back.
The Reason Behind the Decline
Shortly after leaving the store, Shaq received a call from American Express security. They informed him that his card had been stolen and someone was attempting to spend $70,000 at Walmart. Shaq’s response? “No, that was me!” he told them. It turned out that due to the suspicious large purchase, American Express had flagged the transaction as potential fraud and blocked his card as a security measure.
After verifying his identity and the legitimacy of the purchase, American Express restored his spending abilities, allowing him to complete the massive Walmart transaction that day. The story serves as a humorous reminder that even the wealthiest individuals can face unexpected hurdles, especially when it comes to credit card security.
