Sahel Capital Lands $10M to Boost African Agri-SMEs

Big news for African agriculture! Sahel Capital, through its Social Enterprise Fund for Agriculture in Africa (SEFAA), has just secured a significant $10 million investment from the Mastercard Foundation Africa Growth Fund. This funding is a game-changer for small and medium-sized agribusinesses (agri-SMEs) across sub-Saharan Africa.

Fueling Growth and Creating Jobs

What does this mean in real terms? SEFAA plans to use this capital infusion to expand its support for these vital agri-SMEs. The ultimate goal? To create an impressive 10,000 new jobs across 13 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. These businesses are crucial because they often empower smallholder farmers and provide income opportunities, especially for women and youth, who might otherwise be excluded from traditional financing.

Mezuo Nwuneli, managing partner at Sahel Capital, expressed his enthusiasm, noting that since the fund’s inception in 2021, they’ve already supported 18 companies across seven countries. He highlighted that this $10 million commitment is a testament to their team’s hard work and the impactful work they’re doing.

A Shared Vision for Economic Opportunity

This partnership is built on a shared vision. Dorothy Nyambi, president and CEO of MEDA (Mennonite Economic Development Associates), which manages the SEFAA fund in Mauritius, emphasized the alignment with MEDA’s mission. She stated that this collaboration strengthens their joint commitment to creating economic opportunities through inclusive finance.

The Mastercard Foundation Africa Growth Fund’s support is instrumental in catalyzing job creation for women and youth. It’s not just about financing; it’s about building the entire ecosystem these businesses need to thrive sustainably. This investment will help accelerate efforts to improve income opportunities for smallholder farmers by supporting the agri-SMEs that work with them.

How SEFAA Supports Agri-SMEs

Launched in 2021 with initial backing from KfW Development Bank, SEFAA offers flexible financing solutions. This primarily includes debt, but also offers optional equity or quasi-equity. Beyond just capital, they provide crucial technical assistance to ensure these agribusinesses can achieve long-term sustainability.
