Ayesha Curry on Marriage: ‘Career Girl’ Dreams

Did you ever imagine your life would turn out completely different from your childhood dreams? Ayesha Curry is opening up about just that, revealing that her path to marriage and motherhood at 22 wasn’t exactly the plan. The cookbook author recently shared on the ‘Call Her Daddy’ podcast that her younger self was laser-focused on a different future.

From Acting Aspirations to Unexpected Marriage

Ayesha confessed that as a kid, she never dreamt of wedding dresses or planning a big day. Her sights were set on a career in acting, with dreams of moving to Los Angeles after high school. “I didn’t want kids. I didn’t wanna get married. I thought I was gonna be a career girl and that’s it,” she explained.

Life, however, had other plans. She met NBA star Steph Curry through a church youth group in Charlotte, North Carolina. Their connection was undeniable, and they ended up tying the knot in 2011 when Ayesha was just 22. When asked if she felt ready for such a significant commitment, Ayesha admitted she wasn’t entirely sure.

A Whirlwind Start to Family Life

The pace of life picked up even faster when Ayesha became pregnant less than a year after getting married. She recalled expecting a longer period before starting a family, perhaps enjoying their early married life. “My OB said expect it to take up to a year… I was thinking we were gonna be bar hopping. It’s like, ‘Nope. You’re pregnant and you’re gonna be very, very sick.’ ” she shared.

With the arrival of their first child, Riley, in July 2012, followed by Ryan, Canon, and Caius, Ayesha found her life dramatically shifted. “After we got married, we found out we were pregnant with our daughters so quickly I didn’t even have time to think about what I wanted anymore,” she explained. It was a significant departure from the career-focused path she had envisioned.

Finding Fulfillment Beyond the Original Plan

While her life didn’t unfold as planned, Ayesha found a new sense of purpose. She shared that after her first daughter turned one, she felt a shift, realizing she had personal goals beyond motherhood. “I love being a mom, but I love doing other things too,” she stated.

Today, Ayesha has built an incredible career, authoring three cookbooks, hosting a cooking show, and launching her lifestyle brand, Sweet July. Despite the unexpected turns, she expresses deep gratitude for the family she has. “I wouldn’t change a thing, of course. But, yeah, it was not on my bingo card,” she admitted.
