Regina King Honors Late Son Ian

Actress and director Regina King is finding ways to transmute her grief into purpose, keeping the memory of her late son, Ian Alexander Jr., alive. King, who tragically lost her son to suicide in January 2022 at the age of 26, recently shared how she navigates joy and sadness simultaneously.

Finding Purpose Through Pain

In a recent interview with Haute Living, King reflected on her journey, stating, “Now, I understand that sadness and happiness can happen at the same time. I one thousand percent live in the moment more.” She also spoke candidly about Ian’s struggle with depression, noting how difficult it can be for others to comprehend such pain. “Grief is love that has no place to go,” she shared, emphasizing that she speaks of her son in the present tense, as he is always with her.

King’s new venture, a wine label named MianU (pronounced ‘me and you,’), is a heartfelt tribute to Ian. She believes this project is something he would have absolutely loved. The brand is designed to celebrate connection, creativity, and joy, inspired by Ian’s own passions.

A Wine Born Out of Love for Ian

The first product launching under MianU is an orange wine sourced from California’s Mendocino County. It was Ian himself who first introduced King to this unique type of wine. “Its playful and complex flavors capture his taste and talent for transforming everyday moments into something exceptional,” King shared on Instagram.

King explained that MianU is more than just wine; it’s about crafting experiences that highlight the importance of connection. “It’s a wine born out of love, driven by Ian’s passion for living life fully, and designed to inspire others to do the same,” she stated. The wine aims to bring people together and honor her son’s beautiful spirit.

Ian’s Spirit Lives On

King described her son, a late deejay, as endlessly curious, with a beautiful way of discovering and sharing new things. She recalled saving two bottles of wine from her first winery visit to share with him after he turned 21. “He continues to move through me and inspire me daily,” King said. “This wine isn’t just a product; it’s a continuation of his spirit.”

She likened Ian to orange wine itself – unfiltered, bright, and unapologetically expressive. The goal of MianU is to allow people to feel a connection to Ian when they pour a glass, creating their own special moments together.
