Former professional basketball player Jeremy Pargo is making a surprising transition from the court to the director’s chair and screenwriting desk with his new film, ‘The Final Play.’ This romantic comedy, co-written and executive produced by Pargo himself, blends his lifelong loves of basketball and Black romantic comedies into a compelling narrative.
From the Court to the Screen
Pargo, who spent 15 years playing basketball internationally, draws inspiration from his own experiences and those of his fellow players for ‘The Final Play.’ The film follows retired pro basketball player Breylon McNeil, played by Pargo, as he navigates life after the game. The story delves into themes of resilience, love, and self-discovery, particularly as Breylon meets and falls for a successful businesswoman, portrayed by Hazel Renee.
The film authentically celebrates Black men, their aspirations, and challenges stereotypes. Breylon’s journey highlights the importance of vulnerability and subjugating ego for a greater purpose, a message that resonates deeply within the narrative.
A Blend of Childhood Loves and Realness
Pargo cites iconic Black romantic comedies like Eddie Murphy’s ‘Boomerang’ and Will Smith’s ‘Hitch’ as major influences, along with ‘Love Jones’ and his all-time favorite, ‘The Wood.’ He aimed to capture the realism of ‘The Wood’ in ‘The Final Play,’ ensuring the story felt authentic and relatable. “The biggest thing I wanted my film to be was real. And I think we hit on that,” Pargo stated.
Initially conceived as a short film, Pargo realized the story’s complexity required a full 90-page script to do it justice. This expansion allowed him to infuse the film with his personal touch and fully develop the narrative, resulting in ‘The Final Play’ as we see it today.
Mirroring Life and Future Projects
Pargo sees parallels between his own career transition into filmmaking and Breylon’s journey of finding a new path after basketball. “I think they’re very close to running hand in hand, because I’m kind of at that stage that Breylon is at in terms of coming to his career. His career is coming to an end, having to find a new aspect of life, or new new new lane in life. And for me, for Jeremy, is becoming film,” he explained.
Beyond ‘The Final Play,’ Pargo Productions has multiple projects in development, indicating a promising future for Pargo as a filmmaker. The film itself is available on platforms like Google Play, Apple TV, Amazon, and Fandango, inviting audiences to experience this blend of sports, romance, and authentic storytelling.
