In a stunning turn of events, New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell has been indicted on federal charges, including conspiracy, fraud, and obstruction. The accusations stem from an alleged secret romantic relationship she maintained with her bodyguard, Jeffrey Vappie, and the subsequent misuse of public funds to conceal their affair.
Allegations of Misuse and Deceit
Acting U.S. Attorney Michael Simpson stated that public corruption has plagued New Orleans for years, calling this indictment “extremely significant.” Prosecutors claim that Cantrell and Vappie used encrypted apps to hide their communications, deleted messages, and allegedly used city funds for private time together. The indictment specifically mentions 14 trips where the two were reportedly “truly alone.”
The indictment further alleges that Cantrell misled investigators by claiming she had activated an automatic message deletion function in 2021. However, authorities state she only activated this feature in December 2022, after media speculation began to surface. When a private citizen captured photos of them dining together, Cantrell reportedly filed a police report and sought a restraining order.
A Betrayal of Public Trust
Vappie, who had already been indicted on wire fraud and false statement charges, has pleaded not guilty. While Cantrell has not yet publicly commented, her allies argue she is being unfairly targeted. Simpson emphasized that the nature of the relationship, whether romantic or not, is irrelevant; what matters is the “incredible betrayal of people’s confidence.”
The spokesperson for Council President JP Morrell described the situation as “a sad day for the people of New Orleans.” Cantrell, once viewed as a trailblazing figure, now faces her final months in office under intense federal scrutiny and isolation.
