Former WWE CEO Vince McMahon recently shared his perspective on Hulk Hogan’s past racist remarks in an interview with TMZ’s Harvey Levin. While acknowledging the severity of Hogan’s comments, which included using the N-word and describing himself as “racist to a point,” McMahon maintained that these statements did not define Hogan’s true character.
McMahon’s Defense of Hogan’s Character
“I knew he wasn’t a racist,” McMahon stated, reflecting on their long working relationship. “He said some racist things, and he should pay for that, and he did. But in the end, I think that everyone saw the real Hulk Hogan, Terry Bollea, and they felt [like] ‘Now, wait a minute. This guy, he doesn’t act like a racist.’ He’s not a racist. We all make mistakes. That was a big one, but he wasn’t a racist.”
McMahon emphasized that while the comments were “racist” and “unforgivable,” he believes Hogan’s overall character and long-standing contributions to wrestling shone through, allowing fans to see past the offensive remarks.
Hogan’s Return to WWE
Discussing Hogan’s eventual return to WWE after the controversy, McMahon pointed to Hogan’s multiple public apologies. He suggested that over time, fans were able to perceive Hogan’s true character, which, in McMahon’s view, was not that of a racist. McMahon also noted that Hogan’s extensive career and reputation played a role in his comeback.
The full interview, which also features insights from Sylvester Stallone and Mick Foley on Hogan’s career and influence, was part of TMZ’s special, “The Real Hulk Hogan.”
