Diana Ross Steps Down as Cruise Ship Godmother

Iconic singer Diana Ross will not be christening Royal Caribbean’s brand-new cruise ship, Star of the Seas, as planned. Her team confirmed on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, that due to “unforeseen circumstances,” the legendary performer will be unable to participate in the ship’s upcoming naming ceremony.

A Disappointing Update for Cruise Line and Fans

This news comes as a disappointment, especially after Ross, 81, was announced as the ship’s godmother back in June. The initial plan was for her to preside over the christening of the newest Icon-class ship during a special three-day voyage departing August 20 from Port Canaveral, Florida, with a stop at Royal Caribbean’s private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay.

Royal Caribbean CEO and president Michael Bayley had expressed his excitement, stating he “couldn’t imagine a more fitting godmother.” Ross herself had shared her enthusiasm, noting her deep connection to the ocean and how the role felt like a perfect continuation of her journey, especially with her family invited to join.

The Tradition of the Godmother

The role of a ship’s godmother is a long-standing maritime tradition, symbolizing blessings for safe passage and protection. In modern times, cruise lines often select influential women who embody inspiration and achievement. Royal Caribbean has a history of honoring notable Black women in this capacity, including Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Hudson, Mariah Carey, and Whoopi Goldberg.

While Royal Caribbean expressed disappointment, they also stated they are “excited” to announce a new godmother soon. Meanwhile, Diana Ross is gearing up for her “Beautiful Love” tour in the U.S., set to begin on August 16 in Saratoga, California, following her recent UK arena tour.
