Chris Brown’s latest album, ‘Brown,’ has landed with a critical thud, particularly from Pitchfork, which delivered its lowest rating of the 2020s for the project. While fan reception has been mixed, the negative reviews seem to have struck a nerve with Breezy himself. In a recent statement, Brown addressed the criticism, and in doing so, seemingly threw a jab at Swedish pop star Zara Larsson.
Brushing Off the Critics
Addressing his fans, known as ‘Team Breezy,’ Brown expressed his defiance. ‘We kicking they ass, God damn it. We doing this mothaf*ckin’ tour, more sh*t to come,’ he stated, without explicitly naming Pitchfork. He made it clear he doesn’t care about the opinions of those he deems not to be his fans.
His dismissive tone took a turn when he added, ‘If you not my fan, I don’t want you to listen to my sh*t. Go listen to mothaf*ckin’ Zara Larsson or somebody.’ This comment, referencing Larsson’s collaboration with PinkPantheress on ‘Stateside,’ has been interpreted by many as a direct shade, suggesting her music is for those who don’t appreciate his own.
A Low Score and a High Profile Tour
Adding to the narrative, Brown also commented with laughing emojis under Pitchfork’s Instagram post about the album review. Despite the critical reception, ‘Brown’ is projected to debut at #5 on the Billboard 200 with an estimated 70,000 units sold, a number considered relatively low for an artist of his stature. However, this doesn’t seem to dampen spirits for his upcoming joint tour with Usher, which is anticipated to be one of the summer’s biggest musical outings.
The album’s sales projections and the ongoing debate surrounding Chris Brown’s music and public image continue to be a topic of discussion. While critics may be unimpressed, his dedicated fanbase, ‘Team Breezy,’ remains steadfast.
