  • Ex-NFL Player Wesley Huntley & Daughter Sue Phoenix Airport Police

Another instance of alleged police misconduct has surfaced, this time involving former NFL player Wesley Huntley and his daughter at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The father and daughter duo were wrongfully detained at gunpoint during what should have been a routine reunion, leading them to file separate $1 million lawsuits against multiple entities, including the cities of Mesa and Phoenix, their police departments, and airport authorities.

A Father and Daughter’s Terrifying Ordeal

The incident occurred as Huntley arrived to pick up his 26-year-old daughter. According to the notice of claim, police officers “witnessed a standard/common Father and daughter reunion at the Airport and then drew their weapons, forcing them both to the ground, handcuffing both of them, and utterly refusing to take the context of the situation into account.” The lawsuit states that Huntley and his daughter “must grapple with the pain and embarrassment stemming from their public arrest/imprisonment at the Airport.”

The situation became even more egregious when it was revealed that police allegedly believed Huntley’s white Mercedes-Benz was involved in a shooting near the airport. However, the description of the suspect—possibly a “white male, wearing a black mask and black sweats”—did not match Huntley or his daughter, both of whom are Black. Huntley’s legal team, led by Benjamin Taylor, stated that during the incident, Huntley “was terrified for his life as well as the life of his Daughter” and received no explanation for the officers’ actions until after he was restrained.

    Seeking Justice and Accountability

The lawsuit seeks damages for the trauma and embarrassment caused by the wrongful detainment and arrest. Huntley’s legal team is pushing for accountability from the involved police departments and airport authorities, highlighting the alleged “wanton wielding of power” that endangered Black individuals. The case underscores ongoing concerns about racial profiling and excessive force within law enforcement.
