  • Nidiyah Salahuddin: Regal Curls for Black Brides

Your wedding day is all about celebrating your love and looking absolutely radiant. For Black brides, embracing their natural texture and achieving that perfect, regal look is a journey that celebrity and bridal hairstylist Nidiyah Salahuddin is passionate about guiding. In an exclusive chat with TheGrio, Nidiyah shares her invaluable insights on how to find the right stylist and rock your gorgeous crown on your big day.

A Legacy of Hair and Entrepreneurship

Nidiyah’s journey into the world of hair artistry began at a young age, inspired by her grandmother’s skillful use of a hot comb. This early fascination blossomed into a powerful career, following in the footsteps of pioneering Black women like Madam C.J. Walker. Today, stylists like Nidiyah are not only masters of their craft but also savvy entrepreneurs, building strong followings and making clients feel like stars.

With over a decade of experience, including work with ESPN, Nidiyah Salahuddin is the owner of Nidiyah’s Hands Bridal & Event Styling in Edgewater, NJ. She’s known for her elegant updos, seamless extensions, and, importantly, her ability to help women celebrate and enhance their natural hair texture. She sees bridal styling as a privilege, being part of one of the happiest moments in a person’s life.

    Choosing Your Dream Bridal Hairstylist

Finding the perfect bridal hairstylist is more than just looking at Instagram photos. Nidiyah emphasizes the importance of ‘energy.’ As the first person you’ll interact with on your wedding day, your stylist’s vibe can set the tone for the entire celebration. A positive and calming presence is just as crucial as technical skill.

    Talent and Vision Alignment

Beyond energy, talent is paramount. Nidiyah advises brides to ensure the stylist’s artistic style aligns with their personal vision. This means investing time in research, looking at past work, and understanding current trends. What looks amazing on one person might not be the perfect fit for another, and that’s okay!

The Power of a Bridal Trial

Nidiyah strongly recommends a bridal trial, even if there’s an additional cost. This is your chance to see how a style looks on *you* and how it holds up. It’s also the perfect opportunity to test out the exact hair or extensions you plan to use on the wedding day. This trial run ensures you’re both on the same page and confident about the final look.

    Celebrating Natural Hair

Nidiyah is a huge advocate for Black brides embracing their natural hair. She notes that wearing natural styles, including big, beautiful curls, is becoming increasingly popular and is a powerful way to make a statement. ‘It speaks for itself when it enters a room,’ she says, highlighting the inherent beauty and confidence that comes with showcasing natural texture.

    Budget and Logistics

Finally, Nidiyah reminds brides to consider their budget. Finding a stylist whose services fit comfortably within your financial plan is essential. It’s also wise to discuss whether the stylist offers touch-up services for the duration of the event and what those costs might entail, ensuring your look stays flawless from ceremony to reception.

Nidiyah Salahuddin’s work is a beautiful blend of artistry, entrepreneurship, and a deep respect for her clients. She finds purpose in helping women feel their absolute best, creating a legacy she hopes to pass on to her own daughter. As she puts it, hairstylists are truly valuable, often underappreciated, professionals.

Get ready for some major wedding bells! Former ‘106 & Park’ host and actor Terrence J is officially off the market. He recently exchanged vows with his fiancée, model Mikalah Sultan, in a spectacular, ultra-glamorous destination wedding held in Dubai.

    An Extravagant Dubai Celebration

The couple tied the knot on Tuesday, November 11th, at the luxurious Atlantis The Royal resort. The ceremony was nothing short of a spectacle, with 130 guests flying in from across the globe to celebrate the union. Anthony Anderson, known for his role in ‘Black-ish,’ had the honor of officiating the ceremony.

The wedding unfolded across multiple breathtaking spaces within the resort, featuring dramatic décor in white, ivory, and cream. Guests were treated to four curated culinary experiences and a lineup of live performances that transformed the night into a true Dubai event. It was an unforgettable celebration of love.

    Star-Studded Details and Fashion Moments

The ceremony itself set an elegant tone, with rapper T.I. leading the groomsmen down the aisle before Mikalah Sultan made her grand entrance in a sweeping, strapless ball gown. Terrence J looked dapper in a white and black tuxedo, while the wedding party sported matching black attire.

The reception was a non-stop party, featuring a violinist, saxophonist, flutist, a live band, and captivating belly dancers. T.I. also took on MC duties for the evening. A highlight was the couple’s surprise choreographed waltz to Teddy Swims’ hit song ‘Lose Control.’ And the towering white wedding cake? It was engineered to appear as if it were floating, adding another dramatic touch.

    Multiple Gowns and Gourmet Dining

Mikalah Sultan truly shone throughout the day, showcasing multiple fashion moments. She wore two custom gowns, one by Pronovias and another by Brides by Nona. Later, she changed into a sheer white-skirted look before concluding the night in a dazzling, bejeweled fringe mini-dress. Her glam squad ensured she looked flawless for every appearance.

The culinary journey for guests was just as impressive. It included pre-ceremony champagne and cold canapés, a cocktail hour with hot canapés and a raw bar, a four-course dinner featuring classics like Carbone’s spicy rigatoni, and an after-hours spread of truffle pizzas and wagyu sliders. Talk about a feast!

    A Love Story Unfolds

In the days leading up to the main event, the couple and their wedding party enjoyed pre-wedding festivities in Dubai, including a yacht party and a luxurious dinner. Terrence J shared his excitement on Instagram, captioning a photo from their flight, ‘And so it begins.’

After keeping their relationship relatively private, Terrence and Mikalah first announced their engagement in 2023. They chose Dubai for their wedding because it’s a place they had fallen in love with during a previous trip together. ‘Bringing our loved ones on an experience that they’ve never been on was important to us,’ Terrence told People magazine. Mikalah added, ‘We wanted an unforgettable experience celebrating our love with the people we love.’
