  • Commanders’ Daron Payne Suspended for Punching Opponent

The NFL has handed down a one-game suspension to Washington Commanders defensive tackle Daron Payne following an incident of unsportsmanlike conduct. The disciplinary action comes after Payne struck Detroit Lions’ wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown in the head after a touchdown during their game on November 9.

    The Incident and League Statement

The infraction occurred in the second quarter of the Lions’ dominant 44-22 victory. As St. Brown was heading towards the sideline following a touchdown run by Jahmyr Gibbs, Payne turned and punched him in his helmeted face. This act led to Payne’s immediate ejection from the game.

The league’s statement detailed the violations: “During the second quarter, Payne was disqualified for striking Detroit’s Amon-Ra St. Brown, a violation of Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1, which applies to ‘any act which is contrary to the general understood principles of sportsmanship,’ including ‘throwing a punch or a forearm,’ and Rule 12, Section 2, Article 14(d), which prohibits ‘striking, swinging at, or clubbing the head or neck of an opponent with the wrist(s), arm(s), elbow(s), or hand(s).”

    Consequences and Potential Appeal

Payne’s suspension means he will miss the Commanders’ next game against the Miami Dolphins in Madrid. He is eligible to return to the field on November 17. The defensive tackle does have the option to appeal the league’s decision. Following the punch, the Lions successfully kicked a two-point conversion, extending their lead to 22-3. Adding to the Commanders’ woes, Javon Kinlaw received a 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct after making contact with an official.

    Commanders’ Struggles Continue

This suspension comes at a difficult time for the Commanders, who are currently on a four-game losing streak, with each loss being by at least 20 points. This season’s struggles starkly contrast with their 12-5 record last year, which saw them make the playoffs. They have already surpassed last season’s total number of losses.
