  • Damian Marley’s ‘All In The Same Boat’ Doc Premieres

What started as a far-fetched idea in a hot tub has blossomed into a cornerstone of global reggae culture. VIBE is thrilled to present the world premiere of ‘All In The Same Boat,’ a new documentary that dives deep into the incredible journey of Damian ‘Jr. Gong’ Marley’s Welcome to Jamrock Reggae Cruise. The film reveals how this annual festival at sea transformed from a visionary concept into a premier international event.

From Hot Tub Inspiration to Sold-Out Success

The genesis of the cruise reportedly came to Damian Marley’s manager, Dan Dalton, while he was relaxing and smoking. Inspired by existing Blues and Rock & Roll cruises, he envisioned a similar experience for reggae and dancehall fans. Despite initial skepticism and a three-year search for believers, Dalton and Marley remained committed to the idea.

Naming the venture after Jr. Gong’s Grammy-winning 2005 single, the cruise was set to launch in 2014. Surprisingly, a few posts on Damian Marley’s Facebook page were enough to sell out all cabins for the inaugural voyage. Since then, the cruise has upgraded to larger vessels and has become a significant fixture, bringing thousands of music lovers together aboard luxury liners to celebrate Jamaican culture.

A Decade of Culture and Resilience

‘All in the Same Boat’ features exclusive footage spanning the cruise’s first ten years, offering an inside look at its evolution. The film was first screened for loyal attendees during the 10th annual cruise, which faced a last-minute diversion to Mexico due to Hurricane Melissa. A subsequent special screening at Art Basel helped raise funds for hurricane relief efforts through the Marley brothers’ Ghetto Youths Foundation.

Filmmaker Reshma B meticulously sifted through ten years of live footage and interviews to craft the narrative. The documentary highlights not only the triumphs but also the struggles, particularly in finding business partners who believed in the vision. It also pays tribute to beloved artists who have passed away since performing on the cruise, including Sly & Robbie, Toots Hibbert, and Peter Morgan.

Ahead of Its Time: The Music Cruise Boom

The Jamrock Cruise proved to be ahead of its time, anticipating the boom in the music cruise industry as business models shifted from selling recorded music to creating immersive fan experiences. While imitators have emerged, the original reggae cruise remains the gold standard. The documentary showcases iconic performers from its first decade, including artists who faced international touring restrictions. By making stops in Jamaica, the cruise allows these artists to perform for a global audience.

Dancehall legend Bounty Killer, who has been a regular on the cruise since its inception, shares his experience, noting, ‘I never came on a ship before… The first time I came on a ship was the Jamrock Cruise.’ Damian Marley himself describes the cruise community as ‘like a city,’ emphasizing the shared purpose of celebrating reggae music and embodying his father’s message of ‘One Love.’

    Symbolism, Community, and the Future

The cruise’s slogan, ‘If you snooze, you lose,’ reflects the round-the-clock activities available, from dance classes and dominoes to dub yoga and nightly performances. The inclusion of a traditional Rastafarian Niyabinghi session at dawn pays homage to the spiritual roots of reggae music. For many, sailing a cruise ship back to Jamaica playing reggae music holds deep symbolic meaning, connecting to ancestral history.

Having weathered hurricanes and a global pandemic, the Jamrock Cruise looks toward a bright future. The 11th annual cruise is set to depart from Miami in November 2026, featuring Damian and Stephen Marley alongside legends like Burning Spear and Barrington Levy. As Stephen Marley notes, the magic lies in the meticulous curation and thoughtful planning of the experience.

    New Generation Favorites

When asked about their favorite artists from the current generation, Kaine pointed to DaBaby, Latto, GloRilla, and Lil Baby, noting that they ‘got nice songs.’ D-Roc agreed, stating that they generally listen to whatever sounds good and is currently making waves.

However, Kaine also offered a discerning critique, admitting he’s a ‘hard music critic’ and can’t always call every new release a true hit. He explained that while some current music is enjoyable, it doesn’t always have the same impact as their own tracks. ‘What happens when we come on? They hit the floor,’ Kaine remarked, contrasting it with music that can feel like ‘fly on the wall music’ or mere ‘drive through music’ that leaves you wanting more.

The Enduring Power of Strip Club Anthems

The conversation then shifted to the tracks that have become synonymous with nightlife and celebrations. The Ying Yang Twins proudly named some of their own classics, alongside influential artists like 2 Live Crew and SoundMasterT, as essential strip club anthems. The acclaimed choreographer recently shared the very first choreography he ever memorized, revealing a deep connection to the foundational elements of dance.

    Early Influences and Memorized Moves

Knight told VIBE at the Red Bull Dance Your Style World Final that his journey began with Mary J. Blige’s ‘Real Love’ performance on Soul Train. From there, he became captivated by every TLC performance, particularly their iconic 1999 MTV VMA routine. He fondly recalled learning those moves, which led him to embrace the pop scene, studying performances by Britney Spears and Janet Jackson.

He believes it’s fundamental to a dancer’s identity and a choreographer’s vision. ‘Freestyle dance is the core of who we are as dancers and the core of who I am as a choreographer,’ he stated emphatically.

He sees freestyle as the source of a dancer’s personality, attitude, and charisma. Events like the Red Bull Dance Your Style World Final are vital, according to Knight, because they keep the art of freestyle alive, an art form he feels is sometimes overlooked in favor of classical technique and learned routines.

Staying true to the spirit of street style, Knight also shared his top song recommendations for dancers looking to dominate head-to-head competitions. His list includes influential artists like Missy Elliott, Fatman Scoop, and Pharrell Williams, artists whose music inherently brings energy and a strong beat perfect for battle.

  • Diddy Hands Over ‘Ibiza Tapes’ to FBI

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs has fulfilled a court mandate by handing over videotapes and digital devices, collectively known as the “Ibiza Tapes,” to the FBI as part of his sentencing. This compliance comes after Combs was sentenced to 50 months in federal prison and ordered to turn over these materials related to his conviction.

    Compliance with Court Orders

According to AllHipHop, the embattled executive has submitted the “Ibiza Tapes” and other digital devices, including hard drives, USB sticks, iPads, iPhones, and laptops, to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. These items were confiscated during law enforcement raids on Combs’ homes in Los Angeles, New York, and Miami in March 2024.

Combs has been in custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn since his arrest in September 2024 at the Park Hyatt hotel in New York City. The government’s case against him included accusations of sex trafficking, operating a criminal enterprise, and transporting individuals for prostitution in a Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) trial.

    Conviction and Sentencing Details

While a jury found Combs not guilty of sex trafficking and racketeering charges, he was convicted on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution. He received a 50-month prison sentence, a $500,000 fine, and five years of supervised release. The “Ibiza Tapes” are considered crucial evidence, believed to be part of a larger scheme where Diddy allegedly recruited male escorts for private sex parties referred to as “freak-offs.”

Combs’ request to serve his sentence at a New Jersey facility with a drug treatment program, which could potentially reduce his sentence upon successful completion, was rejected by Judge Arun Subramanian. However, the judge did agree to recommend that Combs serve his sentence “as close as practicable to the New York metropolitan area.” Combs’ legal team is reportedly preparing to appeal the conviction to the Second Circuit Court of Appeals.

What are your thoughts on Diddy handing over the ‘Ibiza Tapes’ to the FBI? Do you think this compliance will impact his appeal? Share your opinions in the comments below!
