  • Judge Denies Mary J. Blige’s Request in Misa Hylton Lawsuit

Mary J. Blige will continue to defend herself in civil court against Misa Hylton’s $5 million lawsuit. A New York judge has denied Blige’s request to transfer the case to the state’s Commercial Division, a specialized court for complex business disputes.

    Court Denies Transfer Request

Judge Suzanne J. Adams ruled that disputes concerning artist management and entertainment contracts do not fall under the purview of the Commercial Division. She stated that the case’s complexity, choice-of-law issues, and the substantial amount in controversy did not warrant the transfer.

This decision means the legal battle, filed in April 2025, will proceed in the standard civil court system. The lawsuit centers on allegations that Blige interfered with Hylton’s business relationship with rapper Vado.

    Allegations of Interference and Damages

Misa Hylton claims she had a valid management agreement with Vado through her company, M.I.S.A. Management. The lawsuit alleges that Blige pressured Vado to break ties with Hylton and sign with Blige’s label, Beautiful Life Productions. Hylton further claims Blige actively restricted Vado’s career opportunities, such as delaying music releases and limiting touring prospects, to facilitate this switch.

The complaint also mentions an alleged incident involving Blige’s head of security, identified as her boyfriend, who reportedly told Vado that remaining with Hylton would cause him to “lose out on opportunities.” Through the lawsuit, Hylton is seeking $5 million in damages and a court order to prevent Blige from interfering with her future business dealings.

    Blige’s Defense and Ongoing Case

Mary J. Blige’s legal team has responded by calling Hylton’s claims “patently frivolous” and “meritless.” They argue that Hylton is not properly licensed as a talent agent and that her management company lacks official corporate recognition. Blige’s lawyers have even filed for sanctions, asserting that the lawsuit was initiated for publicity and leverage.

Despite attempts at private negotiation, Hylton’s lawyer stated that discussions collapsed when Blige’s team ceased communication. As of July 2025, the case remains active in civil court, with Blige continuing to push for dismissal while Hylton maintains the validity of her claims.

  • Mary J. Blige Seeks Court Reassignment in Misa Hylton Lawsuit

The legal battle between music icon Mary J. Blige and her longtime friend and former stylist Misa Hylton continues to evolve. In a recent development, Blige’s legal team has filed a formal request to have the lawsuit moved to the New York Supreme Court’s Commercial Division, arguing that the core of the case is a business dispute.

    Dispute Over Management Agreement

The legal entanglement began in late April when Misa Hylton filed a lawsuit against Blige, alleging that Blige interfered with Vado’s management agreement with Hylton’s company, M.I.S.A. Management. Hylton and Vado claim that Blige refused to release Vado’s completed album unless he severed ties with Hylton, who was entitled to 20% of his earnings. The lawsuit further alleges that Blige used exclusive events and her security chief to manipulate Vado and warn him about potential lost opportunities.

Hylton and Vado are seeking $5 million in damages, though Blige’s company has dismissed the suit as “utterly meritless.” Blige’s team has previously criticized Vado’s legal actions, suggesting he failed to follow proper procedures before filing and that Blige’s inclusion was solely for harassment, as she has no direct involvement in his record deal.

Request for Reassignment to Commercial Division

In the latest update, Blige’s lawyers submitted a request on Tuesday, August 26th, to reassign the case to the Commercial Division. Their argument is that the dispute fundamentally revolves around a business disagreement, making it suitable for the court division that specializes in such matters. Additionally, Blige’s legal team contends that M.I.S.A. Management might not be a legitimate business entity and that Blige herself did not sign the contract central to the lawsuit.

As of now, Judge Suzanne J. Adams has not yet ruled on this request for reassignment. The outcome of this procedural move could significantly impact how the case proceeds, potentially shifting the focus to the intricacies of business contracts and legal standing.
