  • Suspect Arrested in Charlie Kirk Shooting

Authorities have apprehended a suspect in the recent shooting death of Charlie Kirk on the Utah Valley University campus. After an intensive search lasting nearly two days, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson was taken into custody.

    Family Tip Leads to Arrest

The breakthrough in the case came when a family member of Robinson contacted a friend, who then alerted law enforcement. According to Utah Governor Spencer Cox, the family member reported that Robinson had “confessed to them or implied that he had committed the incident.” Investigators also learned that Robinson had previously spoken negatively about Kirk.

Robinson is currently being held in Utah County Jail and faces aggravated murder charges. The arrest brings a measure of closure to a case that sent shockwaves through the community.

    Chilling Messages Found

During a press conference, Governor Cox revealed disturbing details about messages Robinson allegedly wrote on the ammunition he brought to the scene. These included phrases like “Hey fascist! Catch!” and “If you read this, you are gay LMAO.” Another round reportedly had arrows that were described as a video game code related to dropping a bomb, accompanied by the phrase “Oh bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao ciao ciao.”

    Suspect’s Background and Governor’s Remarks

Robinson, who was raised in Washington, Utah, reportedly has no stated political party affiliation and did not vote in the last two elections. However, his family indicated that he had become “more political in recent years” and specifically voiced displeasure with Kirk. Governor Cox’s comments at the press conference drew criticism, as he expressed a hope that the shooter would be from another country, suggesting it would be “easier on us” if the perpetrator wasn’t American. This sentiment was widely seen as xenophobic and ignorant of the history of political violence within the United States.

We are currently addressing a situation on campus that requires a shelter-in-place notice as a precautionary measure. — Utah Governor Spencer Cox (paraphrased)

The investigation into the motive and circumstances surrounding Charlie Kirk’s death is ongoing. Authorities are working to piece together the events that led to this tragic incident.

  • Explore ‘Wind River’ Filming Locations in Utah & Wyoming

Taylor Sheridan’s gripping 2017 neo-western, ‘Wind River,’ has recently surged back into the Netflix Top 10, captivating audiences once again with its intense mystery and breathtaking scenery. While the film is set in Wyoming, the production team masterfully utilized the dramatic landscapes of Utah to create its unforgiving, isolated atmosphere. If you’ve been mesmerized by the film’s backdrop, you might be wondering where these iconic scenes were shot. Let’s take a journey through the real-life locations that brought ‘Wind River’ to life.

    Utah’s Snowy Peaks Stand In

Surprisingly, much of the film’s snowy, high-altitude scenery was captured in Utah’s Summit County and the Wasatch Range. These areas provided the perfect setting for the film’s depiction of harsh, wintry conditions. Hidden Peak at Snowbird ski resort, for instance, served as a stand-in for Wyoming’s Gannett Peak, adding to the film’s authentic, rugged feel.

Filming took place in March and April of 2016. To achieve the necessary snowy ambiance, the crew sought out higher elevations. For travelers hoping to experience a similar cinematic winter wonderland, visiting between December and March is your best bet. Getting around is relatively easy, with options like High Valley Transit for regional travel, Park City Transit within the city, and readily available car rentals or ride-share services.

    Summit County and Park City

Beyond the ski slopes, Summit County, including areas around Park City and the Wasatch Back region, was a major filming hub. Production utilized both Park City Studios and Utah Film Studios, but many scenes were shot on location. The Summit County Courthouse in Coalville, for example, was transformed into the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office, lending an authentic Western feel to the investigative sequences.

When visiting, you can explore the Utah Olympic Park and Park City Mountain for stunning outdoor adventures. For dining, Park City boasts great eateries like Billy Blanco’s and Five5eeds, both offering American cuisine and located just a short drive apart. Accommodation options abound, with hotels like the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Park City – The Yarrow and Sweetwater Lift Lodge Resort providing cozy stays with fantastic views.

    The Real Wind River Reservation

While Utah provided much of the visual landscape, the film’s narrative is deeply rooted in its namesake: the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming. Some crucial establishing shots, including road signs like the ‘Lander city limits’ and the reservation entrance, were filmed in Fremont County, Wyoming. These details were vital for grounding the story in its intended geographical and cultural context.

The best time to visit the Wind River Range itself for hiking and climbing is a narrow window between mid-July and mid-August, though unpredictable weather means travelers should always be prepared. Transportation in this more rural region can be limited, with shuttles and taxis available, but renting a car is often the most practical option for exploring towns and trailheads.

    Experiencing Wind River Country

Lander, Wyoming, offers a taste of Western charm with its ranches and proximity to Indigenous cultural heritage. The broader Wind River Country invites visitors to explore scenic areas like the Wind River Canyon. For nature lovers, the Wind River Wild Horse Sanctuary and opportunities for whitewater rafting or fly fishing offer unique experiences.

Dining options are more limited, but the Wind River Brewing Company provides a local spot for an affordable meal. For lodging, the Wind River Hotel offers a rustic stay, alongside various ranches and RV parks for a more immersive experience.

    Beyond the Screen: Real Stories

It’s worth noting that while ‘Wind River’ is a fictional story penned by Taylor Sheridan, it powerfully draws attention to the critical issue of missing and murdered Indigenous women. The film’s setting and narrative are designed to highlight these real-world challenges.

For fans of the film, visiting these locations offers a unique opportunity to connect with the story on a deeper level, experiencing firsthand the stark beauty and isolation that played such a pivotal role in the movie’s success. A sequel, ‘Wind River: The Next Chapter,’ is also reportedly in development, though its connection to the original cast remains uncertain.

  • Where Was HBO’s ‘Mountainhead’ Filmed?

HBO’s latest original film, “Mountainhead,” directed by Jesse Armstrong of “Succession” fame, immerses viewers in the world of tech billionaires seeking seclusion amidst an AI-driven crisis. The film’s authentic ambiance, set in a lavish and remote mansion, is crucial to its satirical portrayal of extreme privilege. For those wondering where this opulent setting was brought to life, the answer is a real, breathtaking estate in Park City, Utah.

    A Real-Life Mansion for a Fictional World

The sprawling 21,000-square-foot mansion featured in “Mountainhead” is indeed a real property located in the exclusive Deer Crest enclave of Deer Valley, Utah. This estate, bordering on the fantastical, boasts an array of high-end amenities, including a private ski gondola, a bowling alley, a rock-climbing wall, and an NBA-sized basketball court, all contributing to the film’s depiction of extreme luxury.

Production designer Stephen Carter and the creative team specifically sought out this mansion for its iconic architecture and unsettling beauty, aiming for a feel similar to the remote grandeur of “The Shining’s” Overlook Hotel. The estate’s furnishings and curated artwork were carefully chosen to reinforce the satire of immense wealth and detachment from the outside world. While the mansion itself is real, the cast did not stay on-site during filming, and unfortunately for fans, the private, gated community location means it’s not open to the public or available for rent.

Beyond the Estate: Exploring Utah’s Scenery

While the majority of “Mountainhead” was filmed within the confines of this remarkable Utah estate, one scene was captured at Snowbird Mountain, located outside Salt Lake City. This is where the four main characters, embodying tech billionaires, write their net worths on their chests amidst the icy altitudes, a moment that visually underscores their detachment and the film’s thematic core.

Utah’s dramatic mountains and pristine snowfields provided the ideal backdrop for “Mountainhead,” visually expressing the film’s themes of isolation and the imposing nature of wealth. The estate’s location in Deer Valley offered sweeping views of Jordanelle Reservoir, Bald Mountain, and the Uinta Mountains, further emphasizing the narrative’s focus on the isolated privilege of the tech elite. The area is renowned for its high-end real estate, with the mansion reportedly selling for over $50 million after an initial listing of $65 million.

For travelers visiting Utah, even without the movie’s characters’ budgets, the region offers plenty to explore. Park City provides numerous activities year-round. Visitors can experience winter sports at the Utah Olympic Park, delve into history at the Park City Main Street Historic District or the Park City Museum, or enjoy the scenic beauty of the surrounding mountains and reservoirs.
