  • Juliana Stratton Wins Illinois Democratic Primary

Illinois Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton has won the Democratic primary, securing the nomination to potentially become the state’s second Black woman senator. Stratton defeated frontrunner Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, bolstered by significant campaign donations, an endorsement from Governor JB Pritzker, and a memorable campaign slogan, “F*** Trump.”

A Historic Nomination and a Controversial Slogan

Stratton’s victory positions her to potentially succeed Senator Dick Durbin, who is retiring. If elected in November, she would follow in the footsteps of Carol Moseley Braun, who was elected as the first Black woman senator from Illinois in 1992. Stratton’s campaign, which included a “F*** Trump” video, has generated considerable attention and discussion.

Her win defied some strategists’ expectations, particularly concerning the potential for splitting the Black vote with fellow candidate Rep. Robin Kelly, also a Black woman endorsed by the Congressional Black Caucus. However, voters like Jade Brown cited Stratton’s independent voice and proven record as factors in their decision, indicating a desire for candidates who stand firm on their principles.

    Campaign Platform and Future Goals

Born and raised on Chicago’s South Side, Stratton began her career as a lawyer before entering politics, serving in the state House since 2016. Governor Pritzker selected her to join the Democratic ticket as Lieutenant Governor in 2018, a role she has held for eight years. During her Senate campaign, Stratton garnered support from prominent Democratic figures like Senator Elizabeth Warren and Senator Tammy Duckworth.

Stratton has pledged to work towards abolishing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), advocating for a $25 minimum wage, and expanding Medicare access to all Americans. These policy positions reflect her commitment to progressive values and addressing key issues important to her constituents.

  • Jasmine Crockett Considers Senate Run

Could Texas soon have another Black woman representing it in the U.S. Senate? Texas Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett is seriously considering throwing her hat into the ring for the Senate race, signaling a potential major shift in the state’s political landscape.

    Confidence in a Potential Win

During a recent interview on Sirius XM’s “The Lurie Daniel Favors Show,” Crockett expressed strong confidence in her ability to win a primary for the U.S. Senate seat. She cited polling data that suggests she has a clear path to victory, stating, “Every other day, there’s a poll that comes out that makes it clear that I can win the primary for the U.S. Senate race in Texas.”

Crockett framed a potential Senate run as a karmic response to losing her current seat. “If you want to take my seat of 766,000 away, I feel like there has to be some karma in that to where I take your seat that is for 30 million away,” she remarked, highlighting her ambition to represent a much larger constituency.

Making History for Black Women in the Senate

If Crockett were to win, she would join an already historic group of Black women in the Senate. Currently, Sens. Angela Alsobrooks (D-Md.) and Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-Del.) are serving, marking the highest number of Black women in Senate history. Crockett’s potential entry would further amplify Black women’s voices in federal leadership.

Crockett, known for her vocal criticism of former President Donald Trump and her Republican colleagues, gained significant public attention for her viral exchange with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene in early 2024. Her willingness to engage in high-profile political battles could serve her well in a statewide campaign.

    Expanding the Electorate

A key factor in Crockett’s decision will be her ability to expand the electorate. She noted, “The question will be whether or not we believe that we’ve got enough juice to expand the electorate and looking at those cross tabs and looking at which demographics are more inclined to come out, who normally do not vote.” If she can mobilize new voters, her chances in the Senate race could significantly increase.

Social media reactions to her potential candidacy are mixed. While some users express enthusiasm and a desire for more Black women in leadership roles in Texas, others are skeptical, with one user comparing the prospect to “trying to catch a tiger with a butterfly net.” Meanwhile, other candidates like Rep. Colin Allred and Rep. James Talarico are also considered frontrunners for the Democratic seat.
