It seems NBA superstar James Harden is facing some serious financial turbulence, and it’s not on the basketball court. His Houston-based restaurant, Thirteen, has reportedly been locked out by its landlord due to a staggering $2.2 million in unpaid rent.
A Multi-Million Dollar Rent Bill
A notice plastered on the restaurant’s door confirms the massive debt, stating that Thirteen will remain closed until the outstanding rent is settled. This news comes as a shock, especially considering the restaurant’s prominent location in Midtown Houston.
Thirteen first opened its doors in 2021, not long after Harden’s high-profile departure from the Houston Rockets. Initially, the eatery boasted a Southern-inspired menu crafted by celebrity chef Tobias Dorzon. However, it underwent a significant revamp in 2024.
Menu Makeover and Expansion Plans
The 2024 transformation included a new interior design and a globally influenced menu curated by chef Siddartha Cadena, who has experience with acclaimed restaurants in Shanghai and Bangkok. At the time of the relaunch, management had even hinted at exploring expansion opportunities.
Harden’s On-Court Success Continues
Despite this business setback, Harden is still making big moves financially on the court. He recently signed a lucrative two-year deal worth $81.5 million with the Los Angeles Clippers in July. This contrast between his professional basketball career and restaurant venture is quite striking.
While Thirteen’s social media pages remain active and online reservations are still being accepted, the comments sections have been disabled. It’s unclear what the ultimate fate of the restaurant will be, but this rent dispute certainly casts a shadow over its future.
