  • HBCU Storytellers: Apply for Sports Broadcasting Grant!

Calling all aspiring storytellers at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)! Do you have a passion for sports and a knack for capturing compelling narratives? Then get ready, because the Television Academy is continuing its Coca-Cola Sports Broadcasting Grant, offering a fantastic opportunity for you to shine.

    Amplify HBCU Athletics Through Storytelling

This program is awarding a total of $40,000 in grants to talented student storytellers across HBCUs. Facilitated by the Foundation of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS), the grant operates under the inspiring campaign theme, “The World Is My Yard.” It aims to amplify the incredible work of future broadcasters as they document the athletes and sports programs at their esteemed institutions.

Last year, finalists from six HBCUs, including Hampton, Florida A&M, and Alabama State University, showcased their features at the 46th Annual Sports Emmy Awards. Their work highlighted the rich history, vibrant present, and promising future of athletics within their respective HBCUs. Southern University and A&M even took home the top prize for their powerful feature, ‘The Hidden Sport,’ which shed light on their famed ‘Hidden Jukebox’ marching band.

    Grant Details and Eligibility

Formerly known as the HBCU Sports Production Grant, this initiative has consistently celebrated the creativity and excellence of emerging talent at these schools. Typically, one to three winners are selected based on the quality and number of submissions.

To qualify, undergraduate students enrolled at HBCUs must create a compelling five-to-10-minute video. This year’s theme, “Excellence Beyond the Field: The Impact of Sports on HBCU Students, Campuses and Communities,” offers a broad canvas for storytelling. You can focus on pivotal moments in your school’s sports history, the influence of a current athlete on campus life, or how sports shape the broader community and culture of your institution.

    Submission Guidelines and Deadline

Your film can adopt a documentary, creative, or journalistic style, as long as it authentically captures the heart of its subject matter. In addition to the video submission, participants must also provide an accompanying essay detailing their production and development process. The deadline for submitting your films is March 2, 2026.

The winners will be announced at the 2026 Emmy Awards ceremony, scheduled to take place in New York City in May 2026. This is an incredible opportunity to gain recognition, funding, and exposure for your storytelling talents in the sports broadcasting world.
