An argument over fountain soda at a Taco Bell in West Palm Beach, Florida, took a dangerous turn, leading to the arrest of an employee. D’Mari Jy’Quan Patterson, 20, is accused of firing a gun during the altercation, which involved a group of women.
The Dispute Over Soda Escalates
According to investigators, the incident began when three women requested water cups but one proceeded to fill hers with soda. This sparked a verbal confrontation with Patterson, which quickly escalated into violence. Video circulating online appears to show Patterson arguing with the women before allegedly pulling out a gun, racking it, and firing a shot.
The chaos inside the restaurant resulted in one woman being shot and collapsing on the floor, while another sustained a graze wound. A third woman managed to flee the restaurant, but police allege Patterson pursued her outside and fired again, missing her but shattering a nearby window.
Injuries and Arrest
The three women involved drove themselves to JFK North Medical Center. Two were treated for minor injuries and released, while the third woman was unharmed, according to police reports. Following the incident, Patterson reportedly called 911 himself, claiming a customer had entered the restricted area behind the counter. He admitted to firing the weapon and indicated its location before officers arrived.
Diners inside the Taco Bell experienced panic, with some rushing to exit and others hiding under tables, unsure of what they had heard. Some patrons, however, seemed resigned to the event, viewing it as an unsettling but unsurprising reflection of the current state of the world.
Self-Defense Claim Unsubstantiated
Investigators stated that Patterson claimed he believed the women were armed, but no weapons were found on them. After reviewing surveillance footage and witness accounts, police concluded that Patterson’s self-defense claim was not supported by evidence, particularly noting that shots were fired as the woman was apparently leaving. Patterson was arrested on April 27 and charged with three counts of aggravated assault with a firearm. He remains in custody awaiting court proceedings.
