  • Symone Sanders-Townsend: MTG & Elphaba’s Shared Revelation

The political landscape is buzzing with reactions to Marjorie Taylor Greene’s recent resignation, and Symone Sanders-Townsend is offering a unique perspective. The MS Now host and political strategist has drawn an intriguing parallel between the Georgia Congresswoman’s public fallout with Donald Trump and the pivotal moment of realization for Elphaba, the protagonist in the musical fantasy ‘Wicked’.

The Wizard of Oz vs. The Wizard of MAGA

Having recently seen ‘Wicked: For Good,’ Sanders-Townsend noted how Elphaba’s discovery that the Wizard is not the all-powerful, righteous figure she believed him to be mirrors Greene’s apparent disillusionment with Trump. “The central revelation in ‘Wicked’ is when Elphaba realizes that the Wizard with whom she has been defending is not some grand, righteous force… he’s really just a small man who uses a lot of mirrors,” Sanders-Townsend explained.

She characterizes Greene as a “true believer” in the MAGA movement, acknowledging that while she may not agree with many of Greene’s political stances, her unwavering loyalty to Trump was evident. Greene’s political identity has been deeply intertwined with Trump’s narrative, including his efforts to overturn the 2020 election and his promises to “clean up the swamp.”

    A True Believer’s Disappointment

However, recent events, such as Greene’s stance on releasing the Jeffrey Epstein files and her placing blame for the government shutdown on Republican leadership, have reportedly caused friction with Trump. This led Trump to question her loyalty, even calling her a “traitor.”

Sanders-Townsend interprets Greene’s resignation as a sign of profound disappointment. “I think I saw a lot of disappointment in that statement,” she remarked. “And just a realization that what she thought it was, the all-powerful grand knowing force, it actually wasn’t that, and that disappointment was something that she’s sitting with, but also something she’s not willing to continue to defend any longer.”
