  • Grenada’s Spicemas: Culture Over Commerce

In the heart of Grenada’s vibrant Spicemas carnival, where rhythm and color fill the streets, Ebony Telesford is leading a quiet revolution. As the founder of Lavish The Band, Telesford is building her enterprise not on profit, but on a deep love for her nation’s culture. Her philosophy is simple: culture over commerce, ensuring that Grenadians can fully participate in their most treasured traditions.

Culture Over Commerce: A Sustainable Model

In a carnival landscape often dominated by commercial appeal, Telesford’s business model stands out. “The goal behind it has just always been about the love for culture,” she shared with Black Enterprise. Her focus on sustainability and accessibility means that as long as the business breaks even, she’s content. This commitment allows her to keep costumes affordable for local revelers, preventing residents from being priced out of their own heritage.

Telesford defines the essence of Spicemas as “experiencing the true essence of Spicemas.” Unlike many bands that offer a single costume for the main parade, Lavish provides a comprehensive four-part carnival journey for the price of one. This inclusive package offers masqueraders access to four distinct events, reflecting the full-immersion experience Telesford cherished growing up.

An Authentic Journey Through Spicemas Traditions

The experience begins with a personal tribute: a traditional Jab Jab jump-up dedicated to Telesford’s father, known as the “king of jab.” Lavish’s interpretation of this centuries-old tradition uses a blend of charcoal and coconut oil, offering a more authentic and less abrasive ritual of freedom and rebellion compared to traditional oil-based paints. The journey continues with the “pageant” on Monday afternoon, followed by the electric Monday Night Mas street parade, and culminates in the spectacular Carnival Tuesday parade.

    Creative Process and Local Empowerment

Telesford’s philosophy extends to her supply chain and creative process. She collaborates with a lead designer and creative manager to develop a unique theme each year. For their recent Greek-inspired collection, the focus was on the Muses of creativity, aiming to “ignite the fire of imagination and remind humanity that the power of creation is its most divine gift.” Telesford gives her designers creative freedom within the conceptual framework.

Her commitment to authenticity is also evident in staffing. Telesford prioritizes hiring Grenadian locals, from the road staff and engineers to the DJs. “I feel like if you’re coming into Grenada to experience Grenada Carnival, you’re not coming to listen to Trinidadian DJs or American DJs. You want to hear what’s happening in Grenada,” she stated.

Navigating Challenges as a Female Entrepreneur

Despite her success, Telesford faces challenges, particularly as a female entrepreneur in an industry dominated by men. She notes being one of only a handful of female band leaders in Grenada and across the Caribbean. Her heartfelt message on Lavish The Band’s Instagram thanks revelers, sponsors, partners, and her dedicated team for their support, emphasizing that the masqueraders are the “heart of Lavish The Band.”

As Telesford continues to innovate and adapt, her work remains a poignant force, driven by a desire to succeed not just for herself, but for her culture and for other women who aspire to follow in her footsteps. Her dedication ensures that Spicemas remains a celebration of Grenadian culture, accessible and authentic for all.
