  • How a Text Message Sparked Kendrick Lamar’s Collab

Ever wonder how some of the most iconic music collaborations come to be? For Grammy-winning producer Jack Antonoff, a chance encounter sparked a significant creative partnership with none other than Kendrick Lamar. It all started with a simple text message, proving that sometimes, the biggest connections come from the most unexpected places.

    A Serendipitous Studio Session

Antonoff, known for his work with artists like Taylor Swift and his own band Bleachers, shared the story during an interview on the ‘Armchair Expert’ podcast with Dax Shepard. He explained that his entry into Kendrick Lamar’s musical world was pure coincidence, thanks to Lamar’s long-time collaborator, Sounwave.

Antonoff is part of a band with Sounwave and Sam Dew. Sounwave, who has been instrumental in shaping Kendrick’s sound since his early EPs, grew up with the rapper and produced many of his biggest hits. One day, while Antonoff was working downstairs at Electric Lady Studios, Sounwave texted him from upstairs, inviting him to “come upstairs and mess around.”

    From a Text to a Three-Year Collaboration

Antonoff went upstairs, started playing some chords, and the rest, as they say, is history. He recalled, “Didn’t leave for three years.” This chance meeting led to Antonoff producing a substantial portion of Kendrick Lamar’s album ‘GNX,’ contributing to roughly 11 out of its 12 tracks. He even co-produced the track “6:16 In LA” with Sounwave.

Sounwave’s role was crucial not only in bringing Antonoff into the fold but also in maintaining the consistent quality that fans have come to expect from Kendrick Lamar and TDE (Top Dawg Entertainment). This collaboration highlights how vital trusted relationships are in the music industry, fostering environments where new creative sparks can fly.

What’s Next for Lamar and Antonoff?

Given the success of their joint efforts on ‘GNX,’ there’s a strong possibility of future collaborations between Kendrick Lamar and Jack Antonoff. With rumors circulating about new music from Lamar on the horizon, fans are eagerly anticipating what these two powerhouses might create next, especially as summer approaches.

  • Kendrick Lamar’s ‘GNX’: A Whirlwind Creation

Did you know Kendrick Lamar basically went straight from one album era to the next without missing a beat? It turns out, the ink was barely dry on ‘Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers’ before he was diving headfirst into what would become ‘GNX’. His longtime collaborator, Sounwave, recently spilled the tea in an interview, revealing just how rapid and intense the creative process for this highly discussed album really was.

From ‘Mr. Morale’ to ‘GNX’: A Seamless Transition

Sounwave explained that Kendrick started sketching out ideas for ‘GNX’ almost immediately after finishing ‘Mr. Morale’. He described this initial phase as a kind of ‘throwing paint on the wall’ experiment. It was all about exploring sounds and concepts without any pressure.

Over the following months, this experimentation blossomed into a massive collection of music. We’re talking about a staggering 80 to 100 songs! This gave Kendrick an incredible amount of material to draw from when it came time to carve out the final album.

The ‘Throwing Paint on the Wall’ Phase

Sounwave shared with Variety that the early days of ‘GNX’ felt like a free-for-all. “The beginning of it was throwing paint on the wall,” he said. “And it started to form this massive funky West groove that we love because [Kendrick and I are] from Compton.”

This distinct West Coast vibe was so strong that Sounwave knew exactly who to bring in to amplify it. DJ Mustard joined to really hone in on that L.A. sound, and later, Jack Antonoff came on board to help refine the evolving sonic landscape. It’s amazing how collaboration can push creative boundaries!

    The Chaotic Finish Line

But the real whirlwind happened right at the finish line. Sounwave revealed that Jack Antonoff was still tweaking the final mixes as late as 4 AM, mere hours before ‘GNX’ dropped on streaming platforms. Talk about cutting it close!

The album was essentially being finalized in real-time while fans eagerly awaited its release. This whole timeline really sheds light on Kendrick’s unique creative process: non-stop creation, intricate world-building, and incredibly precise editing right up to the deadline.

    • Starting a new album the second the last one ends.
    • Crafting up to 100 songs to select the best.
    • Fine-tuning mixes in the dead of night to meet release windows.
    • Embracing the chaos for a more intentional final product.

For Kendrick, the ‘GNX’ era wasn’t a perfectly planned rollout; it was a relentless marathon. And somehow, this intense, chaotic journey made the final result feel even more deliberate and impactful. It’s a testament to his artistic vision and dedication.
