  • Feel Like a ’90s It Girl with Sergio Hudson Style

Imagine this: you’re standing in a sun-drenched hotel suite, surrounded by sketches and fabrics, and the legendary designer Sergio Hudson himself is adjusting a coat around your waist. That’s exactly what happened to me during a special fitting, and let me tell you, it was a moment that transported me straight back to the effortless cool of the ’90s.

This incredible experience was part of a unique collaboration between Volvo and Sergio Hudson, celebrating the new EX90 luxury SUV. It wasn’t just about fashion; it was about weaving together design, storytelling, and the enduring glamour of Black women’s style.

A Coat That Tells a Story

The star of the show was a custom light-gray car coat, crafted from the same luxurious material found in the Volvo EX90’s interior. As Sergio styled me, I could feel the perfect balance of structure and softness, with every detail screaming his signature aesthetic. It felt both powerful and incredibly chic.

Then came the accessory that elevated the entire look: a sleek, platinum belt. It was the perfect finishing touch, adding an undeniable sophistication whether worn with the coat or on its own. It’s those small details that make a big impact, right?

    Channeling ’90s Icons

Our conversation naturally drifted to the iconic Black women who defined effortless style in the ’80s and ’90s. Sergio shared that this special coat was inspired by the standout outerwear of that era – think power shoulders, subtle embellishments, and that quiet glamour that never goes out of style. Women like Jasmine Guy, Lela Rochon, and Diahann Carroll absolutely owned this look.

These women exuded a confidence and poise that made luxury look completely natural. They mastered the art of showing up polished without ever looking overdone. That’s the exact energy Sergio infuses into his designs, and it’s something we can all aspire to.

    Versatility is Key

Sergio envisioned three distinct looks for this collection, proving just how versatile these pieces are. There’s a sharp suit-and-coat combination perfect for the office, a relaxed denim pairing ideal for weekend errands or brunch, and a show-stopping sequined number that screams ‘main character energy’ for a night out.

The goal? To create pieces that seamlessly transition with your life, maintaining that essential touch of glamour every step of the way. It’s about feeling fabulous, whether you’re heading to a board meeting or a coffee date.

    The ‘It Girl’ Feeling

Standing there, seeing myself in the mirror through the lens of Sergio’s design, was more than just trying on a coat. It was a powerful reminder of the enduring influence of these style icons and the quiet luxury embodied by both the fashion and the Volvo EX90. It was that feeling – the feeling of being that girl.

Sergio told me I looked fabulous, and in that moment, surrounded by creativity and inspired by the legacy of incredible Black women, I truly believed it. It’s a testament to how the right design can make you feel like your most confident, glamorous self.

  • Sergio Hudson & Volvo: Luxury Meets the Road

Get ready for a collaboration that’s truly moving! Fashion powerhouse Sergio Hudson, known for his sophisticated and powerful designs, has teamed up with Volvo Cars USA for a collection that perfectly blends automotive innovation with haute couture. This isn’t just about looking good; it’s about style that keeps pace with your life, from the open road to the fashion runway.

    Where Craftsmanship Meets Culture

Imagine the seamless fusion of Volvo’s signature clean Scandinavian design with Sergio Hudson’s unapologetic glamour. That’s exactly what this exciting partnership delivers. The result is a stunning capsule collection inspired by Volvo’s popular electric EX90 luxury SUV, embodying strength, elegance, and a touch of Southern sophistication.

This collaboration celebrates the essence of both brands, bringing together meticulous craftsmanship and a deep understanding of culture. It’s a fresh take on luxury, proving that when done right, it doesn’t just sit still – it drives forward.

Two Must-Have Pieces to Elevate Your Style

At the heart of this collection are two timeless pieces, available starting October 20th. First, there’s the impeccably tailored wool blend car coat. Sergio describes it as a ‘swing coat,’ reimagining a classic with Volvo’s responsibly sourced wool. It’s the perfect blend of old-school glamour and modern practicality.

This coat comes in a soft gray hue, a deliberate choice that mirrors the EX90’s minimalist interior. For Hudson, known for his vibrant jewel tones, working with gray was a creative challenge that pushed him to explore new ways to make the color powerful and chic. It’s a departure that truly pays off.

The Nordico Belt: A Nod to Innovation

The second star piece is the Nordico belt. This stylish accessory pays homage to Volvo’s legacy of innovation, specifically inspired by the invention of the three-point seatbelt. Sergio crafted this wide belt using Nordico, Volvo’s sustainable, bio-attributed material.

Finished with a striking platinum-inspired buckle featuring a co-branded logo, the belt adds a touch of drama. While Hudson often gravitates towards gold, he chose platinum to honor Volvo’s 70th anniversary, adding a significant metallic accent to the collection. The belt’s width is also intentional, bringing that signature glamour and flair.

A Personal Connection to the Collaboration

For Sergio Hudson, this collaboration holds a special significance. Hailing from Charleston, South Carolina, the project connects him to his roots. His mother, who inspired his love for fashion, is from Charleston, and his family’s first car was a Volvo. It’s a partnership that feels deeply personal and authentic.

When we actually got the roll of fabric, I was like, ‘Oh, this is some really nice fabric — something I would use anyway.’ You can tell they did a lot with the fabrication of the wool so that it’s stronger and more durable. — Sergio Hudson

Hudson initially had a moment of playful skepticism, joking about making a coat from car seat material. However, upon seeing and feeling the quality of the fabric, he was genuinely impressed. The blend of functionality and finesse is precisely what makes this collaboration so compelling.

    Driving Fashion Forward

This partnership between Sergio Hudson and Volvo Cars USA is more than just a fashion collection; it’s a testament to how luxury can evolve and move with purpose. It showcases two powerhouses speaking the same language of grace, grit, and exceptional design.

  • Sergio Hudson x Volvo: A Charleston Collaboration

Fashion Bomb Daily’s Claire Sulmers recently traveled to Charleston, South Carolina, for an exciting event celebrating a unique collaboration between acclaimed designer Sergio Hudson and Volvo Cars USA. This powerful partnership honors 70 years of Volvo in the U.S. and beautifully unites two brands with deep connections to South Carolina.

    A Full-Circle Collaboration

Sergio Hudson’s ties to South Carolina run deep, with his mother hailing from Charleston. The connection became even more profound when he discovered that Charleston is home to a major Volvo factory, where the new electric EX90 – the very vehicle inspiring his latest collection – is produced. Hudson shared his excitement: “This is where the car is made. There’s a triple connection for me. Our first family car was a Volvo, and my mom worked for Mack Trucks, which was later acquired by Volvo. They make the car that inspired the collection here in Charleston, where my mom was born. I had no idea there was a Volvo plant here, and when they decided to host the event in this city, it felt so full circle. I used to come here every summer — it really feels like home.”

The collaboration involved Hudson designing a mini-collection inspired by the EX90, utilizing the car’s materials and color palette. Silla from Volvo praised the synergy, noting Hudson’s “classical and timeless” designs with an elegant twist, perfectly capturing the spirit of the EX90. She highlighted Volvo’s Scandinavian roots, focus on functionality, safety, craftsmanship, and understated refinement, aiming to position the brand confidently in the premium automotive space.

    Previewing the Capsule Collection

The event began with an exclusive fitting where guests previewed the limited-edition capsule collection. Inspired by the fully electric Volvo EX90, the line includes a Gray Tailored Wool Blend Car Coat crafted from the same sustainable wool used in the vehicle’s seats, and a Nordico Belt in Dawn, referencing Volvo’s iconic three-point seatbelt. The collection seamlessly transitions from casual denim to sophisticated houndstooth suiting and elegant evening wear, reflecting Hudson’s signature timeless and confident style.

The first day concluded with an intimate dinner, offering guests insight into the collection’s design philosophy. • Sergio Hudson SS26: Timeless Glamour

This New York Fashion Week, Sergio Hudson once again delivered his signature timeless glamour. His Spring/Summer ’26 runway was a love letter to the modern woman – confident, sophisticated, and effortlessly chic. While the stunning clothes stole the show, the hair, makeup, and nails were the perfect finishing touches, completing a picture of classic elegance.

    Sleek Hair: The French Chignon

Lead hairstylist Beppe Dalia drew inspiration from French style to create a sleek, low chignon. “The clothes are so beautiful, so classic—I wanted the hair to echo that mood,” he explained. The look was polished and sophisticated, with just a hint of softness around the baby hairs.

Using Mielle’s styling products, the team ensured every model sported the same unified, timeless hairstyle, perfectly reflecting Hudson’s design philosophy. It was all about clean lines and refined elegance.

    Glowing Skin and Subtle Eyes

Makeup artist Luis Casco aimed for a look that felt authentically ‘elevated’ for the wearer. “Sergio really wanted a look that feels like the woman is herself, just elevated,” he shared. The focus was on radiant, dewy skin that looked “alive, and confident.”

The makeup artistry featured soft black liner to frame the eyes and a delicate pop of copper shimmer on the lids. A custom blend of blush and highlighter was used to enhance the skin’s natural glow, creating a universally flattering finish.

Sparkling Nails: Jewelry for the Fingers

Nail artist Erica De Los Santos translated Hudson’s glamour into a dazzling manicure. The goal was a stunning chrome effect achievable without gel. By layering Essie’s ‘Good as Gold’ with Lights Lacquer glitter, the nails gleamed like precious jewelry under the runway lights.

De Los Santos noted the look is “chic but simple, easy to recreate at home.” For those inspired, she recommends starting with a clean manicure, applying one coat of gold polish, and then two coats of glitter for that maximum impact.

From the perfectly sculpted hair to the luminous skin and sparkling nails, every element of Sergio Hudson’s SS26 show embodied the essence of a strong, self-possessed, and eternally stylish woman.
