Meet Jordan King, a young scientist who’s not just making discoveries in the lab but also breaking barriers online. With his dreadlocks, gold grill, and a passion for microbiology, King is challenging the traditional image of a scientist and inspiring a new generation, all while documenting his work from the stunning Florida Everglades.
Making Science Accessible and Engaging
King has amassed over 200,000 followers across various social media platforms, where he shares his learning adventures. He notes that many followers comment on his distinctive personal style, which deviates from the conventional image of scientists. “I think what makes me stand out is my personal style. Me just being myself and not conforming to the standard of a scientist,” King told NBC News. This approach makes complex scientific concepts more relatable and accessible to a wider audience.
His research primarily focuses on ‘floc,’ a loose organic matter crucial for sediment formation and the growth of plants in ecosystems like the Everglades. King explains its importance: “The floc is what helps to form the sediment, so without floc, there is no sediment, and without sediment, there are no plants because they need it to grow… and then the ecosystem becomes a whole mess.”
From Research to Inspiration
King earned his master’s degree from Florida International University, a journey that began after contacting numerous professors, with only a couple responding. He decided to share his academic research on social media and in schools, aiming to raise awareness and encourage more young people, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds, to pursue environmental sciences.
He shared his experience visiting a South Florida elementary school: “It feels so good to not only talk to our future generation, but also inspire them using my career in environmental science. As a scientist, I feel like it is my duty to do this.” King also uses his platform to highlight other Black microbiologists, who represent less than 3% of scientists in the field, further championing diversity in STEM.
Challenging Conventions
Jordan King’s work is a powerful example of how passion, authenticity, and modern communication can intersect with scientific endeavor. By embracing his individuality and sharing his journey openly, he’s not only advancing understanding of critical environmental issues but also paving the way for a more inclusive and dynamic future in science.
