  • Arthur Blank Donates $50M to Atlanta HBCUs

In a powerful display of support for higher education and Black communities, Arthur Blank, founder of Home Depot and owner of the Atlanta Falcons, has announced a monumental $50 million donation to Atlanta’s four historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). The Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation is committing these funds over 10 years to provide crucial gap scholarships, aiming to help students overcome financial hurdles and achieve their graduation goals.

    Investing in Opportunity and Graduation

The foundation’s announcement highlighted that financial barriers, rather than academic challenges, often prevent students from earning their diplomas. The $50 million commitment will support students at Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, Morris Brown College, and Spelman College. Beginning in 2026, this program is projected to assist nearly 10,000 students, enabling them to stay enrolled, graduate on time, and launch their careers.

“Our hope is that by helping more students earn their degrees, launch successful careers and become alumni who give back, we are investing in a cycle of opportunity that benefits young people and their families in Atlanta and communities across the nation for years to come,” the foundation stated. This initiative is particularly timely, coming shortly after reports of the Trump administration’s plans to redirect federal funding from HBCUs.

    Transformative Impact on Atlanta’s HBCUs

This donation represents the foundation’s largest gift to Georgia-based HBCUs to date, building on previous contributions. For instance, Spelman College previously received $10 million for an innovation lab, and Clark Atlanta, Albany State, Miles College, and Savannah State received $6 million for athletic field improvements. The leadership at these institutions expressed immense gratitude for Blank’s transformative investment.

Dr. George T. French Jr., President of Clark Atlanta University, called the donation “transformative,” stating it will “empower Clark Atlanta students to succeed and lead globally.” Similarly, Dr. F. DuBois Bowman, president of Morehouse College, believes the funds will shape the future for tomorrow’s leaders, ensuring that “talent, ambition, hard work, and integrity, not financial hardship, will determine their futures.”

    The Economic Power of HBCUs

The foundation’s investment is backed by data highlighting the significant economic impact of Atlanta’s HBCUs. According to their research, these institutions contribute $1 billion annually to the city’s economy and play a crucial role in advancing students from lower-income households into higher economic brackets. This donation not only supports individual students but also strengthens the broader community and economy.

  • FAMU Seeks $375K Grant for Nursing Program

Florida A&M University (FAMU) is set to pursue a substantial grant to further strengthen its nursing program. The university’s Board of Trustees has unanimously approved a request to apply for $375,000 from the LINKING Industry to Nursing Education (LINE) Fund. This funding aims to expand the program’s reach and enhance student opportunities.

    Grant Proposal Details

The proposal, submitted with a September 1 deadline, outlines a strategic allocation of the requested funds. A significant portion, $300,000, is earmarked for scholarships for students within the School of Nursing. An additional $55,000 would support crucial faculty development initiatives, and $20,000 would be dedicated to student leadership opportunities, including professional development at national nursing conferences.

This grant application is a collaborative effort with HCA Florida Healthcare, building upon their existing contributions to FAMU, which include providing access to clinical rotations at their Tallahassee-area facilities. The partnership underscores a shared commitment to addressing the growing demand for trained nurses in Florida.

    Addressing Florida’s Nursing Shortage

The need for qualified nurses in Florida is critical. The Florida Hospital Association reported over 16,000 nursing vacancies in 2024, with a double-digit turnover rate of 17.6%. The LINE Fund specifically aims to incentivize partnerships between nursing schools and healthcare providers to help fill these gaps.

FAMU’s School of Nursing has demonstrated consistent improvement in student outcomes, notably increasing its NCLEX pass rate by over 10%. Currently, 93% of FAMU nursing students pass the NCLEX, significantly exceeding the state threshold of 75%. This success rate has risen from 82% in the previous academic year.

    Investing in Future Healthcare Professionals

The proposed funding would further enhance the program’s existing strengths, including financial support, mentorship, and leadership training. By enriching instruction through faculty workshops and expanding clinical placement options, FAMU aims to produce even more highly skilled nurses.

Florida State University is also considering a similar nursing grant proposal, highlighting a statewide effort to bolster the healthcare workforce. The success of FAMU’s application could provide essential resources to support student retention, faculty growth, and clinical training, reinforcing FAMU’s legacy of preparing future healthcare leaders.
