  • Atlanta Nonprofit Offers Year of Free Rent

In a time when many families are struggling with rising housing costs and economic uncertainty, an Atlanta-based nonprofit is stepping up to offer substantial relief. FreeRent has relaunched its grant program, providing eligible families with a full year of rent payments, a move that could be life-changing for those facing hardship.

A Year of Rent Covered: How It Works

This isn’t FreeRent’s first rodeo; it’s the third year the nonprofit has offered its rental assistance initiative. While they typically help families with one or more months of rent, this special grant program goes above and beyond by covering rent payments for an entire year. Beyond just financial aid, participants also receive crucial resources and support designed to guide them toward long-term financial stability.

Ashley Stewart, Executive Director of FreeRent, highlighted the critical need for such programs. ‘Just one thing can happen to get them behind [on rent] or on the brink of housing instability,’ she stated, emphasizing that a year of covered rent can help families not only stabilize but also build a path for their future financial well-being. The organization stresses that more people are at risk of losing their housing than often realized.

    Eligibility and Financial Education

To be eligible for this incredible opportunity, families must have active leases within Atlanta city limits and have recently experienced a significant hardship, such as a family crisis or natural disaster. Additionally, household income must be at or below 80% of the area median income, with a rent-to-income ratio of 50% or less. The program also requires at least one full-time working adult in the home and a commitment to participating in FreeRent’s financial education program.

A key goal of the program is to help grant participants save at least three months of living expenses while their rent is being covered. Past participants have found immense value in this ‘hand up,’ not a ‘handout,’ as described by Dwantavia Edwards, a 2025 participant whose life was ‘tremendously’ changed by the grant.

    Addressing Atlanta’s Housing Crisis

FreeRent, which receives significant funding from community donations, including $460,000 raised from its annual fundraiser in August, is making a tangible difference in Atlanta. The city is grappling with a severe affordable housing crisis, where rising rents have outpaced wage growth, according to data from the Atlanta Regional Commission. FreeRent’s efforts aim to provide much-needed relief to families most affected by these challenging economic conditions.

With a goal to assist 300 families by 2030, FreeRent continues its vital mission. The organization also encourages community members to nominate individuals they know who could benefit from this life-altering program.
