  • Instagram Finally Launches iPad App, Prioritizing Reels

Good news for iPad users! Instagram has finally released a dedicated app for the tablet, a feature many have been requesting for years. Available since September 3rd, the app brings a familiar Instagram experience but with a significant redesign tailored for the iPad’s larger screen.

Reels Take Center Stage on the Big Screen

One of the most striking changes is that the app now opens directly to a feed of Reels, Instagram’s short-form video format designed to compete with TikTok. This strategic decision underscores Meta’s increasing emphasis on video content and follows months of anticipation surrounding a tablet-specific app. The Reels-first approach aims to enhance content discovery and engagement on the larger display.

While Reels are prioritized, core Instagram features remain easily accessible. Stories are prominently displayed at the top of the homepage, and users can switch to a “Following” tab for a feed that mirrors the traditional mobile experience. This feed includes still images and offers a chronological sorting option for those who prefer to see posts in the order they were shared.

    Enhanced Interface for Larger Screens

The iPad interface leverages the larger screen real estate to improve usability. For instance, comments on Reels now appear alongside full-size videos, offering a more integrated viewing experience. Similarly, the direct messages page displays the inbox and individual chats side-by-side, creating a layout reminiscent of desktop messaging applications like Messenger.

Meta has confirmed that this redesigned interface will also be rolled out to Android tablets in the near future. With this new iPad app, Instagram is not only improving content discovery and user experience for tablet users but also reinforcing its commitment to short-form video as a central pillar of its platform.
