  • Paapa Essiedu Faces Racist Backlash Over Snape Role

Taking on an iconic role is a dream for many actors, but for Ghanaian-British actor Paapa Essiedu, the opportunity to play Professor Severus Snape in HBO’s upcoming ‘Harry Potter’ reboot has come with a dark side. Essiedu has revealed he’s facing a disturbing wave of racist backlash and even death threats over his casting.

Facing Threats for a Dream Role

Essiedu, 35, shared the harsh reality of the online hate he’s received in a recent interview with The Sunday Times of London. He disclosed that some individuals have gone as far as to threaten his life, telling him to ‘Quit or I’ll murder you.’ The actor admitted that while he hopes for the best, the emotional toll of such threats is significant.

This type of racist backlash is unfortunately not new for Black actors stepping into roles previously defined by white actors. Similar reactions occurred when Halle Bailey was cast as Ariel in ‘The Little Mermaid’ and when Idris Elba was rumored to play James Bond. The news of Essiedu taking on the role of Severus Snape, famously portrayed by the late Alan Rickman, has ignited similar online vitriol.

    Fueling Passion, Not Intimidation

Despite the disturbing threats, Essiedu revealed that the hate actually fuels his passion. He’s determined to make the character his own and sees the importance of representation within the beloved ‘Harry Potter’ franchise. He emphasized the motivation he feels when thinking about children who look like him being able to see themselves represented in the magical world of Hogwarts.

The HBO series, based on J.K. Rowling’s seven books, is set to release in 2027. The cast announcement in 2025 also included John Lithgow as Dumbledore and Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter. Essiedu’s commitment to his role, in the face of such adversity, highlights his dedication to his craft and to fostering inclusivity.

    A Stand Against Hate

Essiedu’s experience underscores a larger issue of prejudice in entertainment. His powerful response demonstrates resilience and a commitment to ensuring that diverse audiences can connect with classic stories. He’s not letting the negativity intimidate him from creating work he’ll be proud of.
