  • Fox News Criticized for AI Video Controversy

Fox News is under fire for its handling of a viral video that turned out to be entirely AI-generated. The conservative news outlet initially reported on the clip as if it were real, depicting a Black woman complaining about SNAP funding cuts, a move that has drawn sharp criticism for spreading misinformation and potentially racist narratives.

The AI Video and Initial Reporting

The video, which circulated widely, featured a fabricated woman discussing her “seven baby daddies” and her distress over paused SNAP benefits due to a government shutdown. Fox News initially ran with the story, with headlines like “SNAP beneficiaries threaten to ransack stores over government shutdown” and a subheadline stating, “One mother claims taxpayers must feed her children as SNAP benefits face cuts.”

CNN journalist Andrew Kaczynski was among the first to point out the issue on X (formerly Twitter), highlighting that Fox News had fallen for an AI-generated video and subsequently had to rewrite its entire story. He noted, “Not sure if I’ve seen anything like this before — Fox fell for an AI video and basically rewrote its whole story when called out.”

    Correction and Backlash

As the story gained traction, Fox News updated its article to acknowledge that the video appeared to be artificially generated. The headline was changed to “AI videos of SNAP beneficiaries complaining about cuts go viral,” and an editor’s note was added explaining the initial oversight. However, critics argued that the correction wasn’t enough.

Commentators slammed the news outlet for initially presenting the fake content as real and for using it to promote what they described as “racist, anti-SNAP propaganda.” One commentator stated, “Fox is now reporting on these AI videos as if they are real and is using them to smear Black Americans with racist, anti-SNAP propaganda. We are in a very dangerous and disturbing place.”

The Dangers of AI in News

The incident highlights the growing concerns surrounding the use of AI-generated content and its potential to spread misinformation, especially when integrated into news reporting. Critics argue that even with corrections, the initial reporting can perpetuate harmful stereotypes against Black individuals, particularly during a time of uncertainty regarding SNAP funding.

As of November 4, SNAP funding remains a contentious issue, with ongoing legal battles and political debates. The situation underscores the critical need for media outlets to rigorously verify sources and content, especially in the age of rapidly advancing AI technology.

  • Racist AI Videos Stereotype Black Women Over EBT

The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has brought incredible innovation, but it’s also being weaponized to spread harmful stereotypes. Recently, AI-generated videos depicting Black women yelling about EBT (Electronic Benefit Transfer) cards have surfaced online, sparking widespread outrage and disgust. These videos are particularly inflammatory given the ongoing discussions about potential cuts to SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) funding, which provides crucial food assistance to millions of Americans.

    Stereotypical Depictions Fueling Outrage

One AI-generated video, initially released in July, shows a fake Black woman wearing a hair bonnet in a government office. She’s depicted yelling about being unable to reload her EBT card to buy McDonald’s Happy Meals for her six children. The video continues with her calling a friend, making racist remarks about leaving her children to eat watermelon while she dines out. Another video, created using OpenAI’s Sora, features a fake Black woman shouting about her EBT card being shut off, set against a backdrop of a messy living room with yelling children.

These AI creations tap into deeply ingrained racist tropes, portraying Black women as irresponsible, overly reliant on government benefits, and neglectful mothers. The timing of their resurgence, coinciding with debates over SNAP funding, adds a dangerous layer to their spread, potentially influencing public opinion and policy decisions.

The Internet Pushes Back Against Misuse

The internet community is not letting these harmful videos go unchecked. Many are calling out the misuse of AI technology, with some users labeling it as ‘digital blackface.’ One X user powerfully stated, ‘They’re using AI to make videos of Black women yelling about their EBT cards on TikTok. They were always going to come after us first with AI, that’s why it’s f-ck AI and I need you all to stop using it for real.’

Others have pointed out the false narrative that Black people are the primary recipients of food stamps. Data from the Food Research and Action Center indicates that white individuals constitute 37% of SNAP recipients, a higher percentage than Black individuals. The misuse of AI to promote such racist perceptions and misinformation is a significant concern, especially as it can exacerbate existing societal problems and fuel discriminatory policies.
