Great news for the beauty world! Pat McGrath Labs has officially emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy, marking a significant turning point for the celebrated makeup brand. Miami-based GDA Luma has taken the reins as the new owner, ushering in a new era for the company founded by the legendary Pat McGrath.
A New Chapter with GDA Luma
On April 17th, a Florida judge approved the brand’s exit from bankruptcy proceedings. Under the new ownership structure, GDA Luma will hold a controlling stake through a newly formed holding company. Importantly, founder Pat McGrath will transition from CEO to Chief Creative Officer, ensuring her visionary influence remains at the heart of the brand’s creative direction.
McGrath expressed her continued passion for the brand, stating, “Creating beauty that moves people has been my life’s work, and that never stops. I will continue pushing boundaries in my role as Chief Creative Officer alongside GDA Luma, and I look forward to the future.” The collaboration aims to accelerate innovation, enhance customer engagement, and drive global expansion.
Focus on Growth and Legacy
Gabriel de Alba, Founder and Managing Partner of GDA Luma, highlighted the brand’s potential, calling it “an iconic brand with extraordinary creative equity and global potential.” He emphasized their commitment to stabilizing the business, implementing strong operational practices, and investing in sustainable growth while preserving the brand’s legacy of creative excellence.
This acquisition follows a period of financial restructuring, including a $10 million debtor-in-possession financing from GDA Luma in February to support operations during the bankruptcy process, along with a $20 million commitment for post-emergence working capital. The judge presiding over the bankruptcy hearing expressed satisfaction that McGrath would continue to lead the legacy of the company she built.
A Legacy of Innovation
Pat McGrath, a self-taught makeup artist, rose to global fame for her groundbreaking runway work. She launched Pat McGrath Labs in 2015 with the wildly successful Gold 001 pigment, which sold out instantly, and expanded into a full collection by 2017. She also continues her role as creative director for La Beauté Louis Vuitton.
