  • Could Dental Floss Deliver Vaccines?

For those who dread the yearly flu shot or any vaccine-related needle-pokes, there might be a glimmer of hope on the horizon. A recent study has explored a novel approach to vaccine delivery: using dental floss to administer vaccines through the gums, leveraging their potential for absorption.

    Flossing for Immunity: Early Findings

Researchers conducted a study involving flossing mice, successfully administering a flu vaccine into their gums. The initial results are promising, indicating a strong immune response. While most vaccines are typically injected intramuscularly, other methods like oral vaccines (rotavirus) and nasal sprays (live flu vaccine) already exist, showing that alternative delivery systems are viable.

The study highlighted that the gums, particularly the pockets between teeth, are highly absorbent. Lead author Harvinder Singh Gill, an engineer at North Carolina State University, was inspired by this permeability: ‘If it is highly permeable, could we not use it for vaccination?’ The research team tested not only the live flu vaccine but also protein, inactivated virus, and mRNA vaccines, all of which elicited an immune response.

    Human Trials and Future Challenges

While the findings in mice are encouraging, human clinical trials have not yet begun, so the effectiveness in people remains unknown. Several challenges will need to be addressed before this method could be widely adopted. These include how to administer vaccines to infants or individuals without teeth, and whether gum disease might affect the efficacy of such oral vaccines.

Gill expressed optimism about the ongoing research, stating, ‘We’re optimistic about that work and —depending on our findings— may then move toward clinical trials.’ The potential to bypass needles could be a significant breakthrough for individuals with needle phobias and could offer a more accessible vaccination method in the future.
