As Memorial Day approaches each year, we honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. But do you know the full story behind this solemn holiday? It turns out that one of the earliest, and often overlooked, celebrations of what we now call Memorial Day was organized not by the government, but by formerly enslaved African Americans in Charleston, South Carolina, shortly after the Civil War.

A Powerful Commemoration in Charleston

Picture this: May 1, 1865. In Charleston, a city that witnessed the start of the Civil War, over 3,000 Black schoolchildren, alongside white missionaries and Black Union regiments, gathered. They carried bouquets of flowers, sang patriotic songs like “John Brown’s Body,” and listened to Black ministers recite biblical verses. This wasn’t just a gathering; it was a profound act of remembrance for fallen Union soldiers.

This significant event was documented by newspapers like The New York Tribune and The Charleston Courier at the time. However, historian David Blight discovered that this powerful story had been largely suppressed from both local and national memory. When Blight initially tried to verify the accounts, he was met with disbelief, with some sources claiming it never happened.

Rediscovering a Suppressed History

Blight’s suspicions were confirmed years later when an elderly Black woman from Charleston approached him after a lecture. She shared that her grandfather used to tell stories of a parade at the old racetrack, a tale her family never knew whether to believe. This personal testimony underscored the reality of a history that had been deliberately hidden.

Even after the federal government officially declared Memorial Day a holiday, the contributions of Black Americans to its origin were largely ignored. Yet, for Black veterans of the Civil War, honoring their fallen compatriots became a lifelong tradition. The U.S. National Park Service highlights the story of Joseph Clovese, a formerly enslaved man who served in the 63rd United States Colored Infantry, as an example of this enduring commitment.

The Poignancy of the Origin

The significance of this early celebration is amplified by its context. Occurring in Charleston, at a cemetery for Union dead, and organized by formerly enslaved African Americans, the event carries immense poignancy. It represents a powerful assertion of freedom, remembrance, and the recognition of Black soldiers’ sacrifices during the Civil War.

Today, Memorial Day honors all who have died in service across every war. But remembering its genesis, particularly the vital role played by freed African Americans, adds a deeper layer of understanding and appreciation to this important day of reflection.
