  • South Fulton Mayoral Race: Candidates Face Allegations

The race for the South Fulton mayor’s seat is heading into a runoff election on December 2nd, but it’s not just policy debates capturing attention. Both candidates, Dr. Mark Baker and Councilwoman Carmalitha Gumbs, are facing significant allegations that could impact the outcome of the election.

    Allegations Against Dr. Mark Baker

Mayoral candidate Dr. Mark Baker is currently dealing with a temporary protection order filed against him. The order stems from an alleged confrontation with South Fulton resident Christopher McCreary at an event on November 14th. According to the petition, Baker allegedly threatened McCreary after the resident had posted social media criticism of Baker’s leadership.

McCreary stated in the petition, “I reached out to shake his hand. He said I should hit you in your face for talking [expletive] about me on [social media]’… I told him I was worried for my safety.” Baker has denied the accusations, calling the protection order a “staged provoking attack” and a political stunt. A hearing regarding the order is scheduled for December 15th.

Ethics Complaint Filed Against Carmalitha Gumbs

Meanwhile, Councilwoman Carmalitha Gumbs, the other candidate in the runoff, faces an ethics complaint filed by resident Reshard Snellings. The complaint alleges that Gumbs improperly voted on a warehouse development project because the developer was a known donor to her campaign. Snellings argues that voting on a bid from a political donor violates public trust and that the city charter required Gumbs to recuse herself from the vote.

Gumbs has strongly refuted these claims, asserting that she acted properly and, in fact, voted against the warehouse development in question. While the city attorney confirmed that Gumbs did not violate the city charter in this instance, the city’s ethics board is still reviewing Snellings’ complaint, keeping the issue alive during the critical election period.

With the runoff election just days away, these allegations cast a shadow over the candidates and the political landscape of South Fulton. Voters will have to consider these serious claims as they decide who will lead their city.

  • Marietta Mayor Wins Tight Race Against Young Challenger

The mayoral race in Marietta, Georgia, has concluded, and it was a nail-biter! Incumbent Mayor Steve “Thunder” Tumlin, 78, narrowly secured his victory against 24-year-old challenger Sam Foster. This close contest signals potential shifts in the political landscape of this Metro Atlanta city.

A Tight Race for Marietta’s Top Seat

According to Atlanta News First, Tumlin won by a slim margin of just 78 votes. The outcome kept political observers on the edge of their seats, watching to see if the long-time Republican mayor could be unseated by the much younger Democrat, who was running for office for the first time. Despite his lack of prior political experience, Foster presented a compelling vision for Marietta.

Foster, an IT systems engineer who chose to make Marietta his home after attending Kennesaw State University, ran on a platform focused on lowering the cost of living, enhancing public transportation, and improving city safety. He actively used his social media presence to share his plans and connect with residents, aiming to make life easier for those in the city located just 20 miles north of Atlanta.

A Historic Campaign, Even in Defeat

While Foster didn’t win this election, his campaign made history. Had he been victorious, he would have become the youngest Black mayor in Georgia’s history. His dedication to Marietta, stemming from his time as an undergraduate when he noticed systemic issues, led him to remain in the city, lead a local nonprofit, and attend city council meetings – all sparking his decision to run for mayor.

With a population of over 60,000 according to the 2020 census, Foster aimed to address displacement and increase accessibility and transparency in city government. His campaign, supported by organizations like The CollectivePAC, Candidates for Common Good, and Georgia Conservation Voters, proved historic, even without securing the win. This race suggests a gradual shift towards the left in the northern Atlanta suburbs.

    Looking Ahead

Although Marietta’s political landscape remains largely unchanged for now, Foster’s strong showing is part of a larger movement among Georgia Democrats hoping to create a ‘blue wave’ across the state. The election of two Democrats to the Public Service Commission also indicates a reshaping of the political terrain ahead of the midterms. Foster’s commitment to his community and his vision for Marietta leave a lasting impact, regardless of the election outcome.

  • Detroit Poised to Elect First Black Woman Mayor

Election Day is here, and Detroit is on the cusp of potentially making history! The city’s mayoral race features a compelling contest between City Council President Mary Sheffield and Pastor Solomon Kinloch Jr. If elected, Sheffield would become the first Black woman to hold the esteemed position of mayor in Detroit.

    Mary Sheffield’s Vision for Detroit

Sheffield, who has served on the Detroit City Council since 2013 and made history in 2022 as the youngest person elected council president, brings a clear vision for the city’s future. Her platform focuses on critical issues that have long plagued Detroit, including reliable transportation, affordable housing, and the revitalization of distressed neighborhoods. She acknowledges the progress made under current Mayor Mike Duggan but emphasizes her readiness to “finish the work that we started.”

Her priorities include improving education, ensuring livable wage jobs for residents, and reducing crime rates, which she describes as fundamental to the city’s continued rise. Sheffield has already outlined a 100-day plan to build upon Detroit’s progress and establish new standards for city hall.

Scrutiny and Controversy on the Campaign Trail

While Sheffield has garnered significant support, her campaign hasn’t been without its challenges. Scrutiny over her social media presence arose during a June 2025 debate when former opponent Saunteel Jenkins remarked, “If you want a mayor who shows up on Instagram but doesn’t show up for meetings, then follow Mary.” This jab followed controversy over Sheffield accepting free tickets to a Jeezy concert, where the artist gave her a public shoutout.

Pastor Solomon Kinloch Jr. seized on this, condemning the tickets and linking them to Detroit’s past reputation for corruption. Sheffield’s campaign spokesperson, Brittni Brown, countered by stating the tickets were a gift from Comerica Bank and thus not subject to the city’s ethics ordinance prohibiting gifts from entities seeking official action. Kinloch, the pastor of Triumph Church for 27 years, secured his place on the ballot with a substantial number of votes.

Kinloch’s Focus on Poverty and Crime

Kinloch shares similar goals for the city, emphasizing public safety, affordable housing, and business prosperity. A key focus of his platform is addressing the high rates of child poverty and violent crime in Detroit. “We’ve got too many children in our community that are living in poverty, we have a violent crime rate that’s second to the nation, when we have people struggling because they’re spending 50 percent of their income to keep a roof over their head, this is a critical time,” Kinloch stated, underscoring the urgency of the situation.

  • Hakeem Jeffries Backs Zohran Mamdani for NYC Mayor

In a significant move for New York City politics, House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries has thrown his support behind Zohran Mamdani in the race for NYC Mayor. This endorsement comes after months of speculation and marks a pivotal moment, aiming to unite a divided Democratic party and present a united front against the influence of Donald Trump.

    A Calculated Endorsement

Jeffries, a prominent Black political figure in the city and representative for New York’s 8th congressional district, has historically had disagreements with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), of which Mamdani is a member. However, in a statement to The New York Times, Jeffries acknowledged that Mamdani earned his nomination through a “free and fair” primary, despite their “areas of principled disagreement.”

Jeffries emphasized Mamdani’s focus on the city’s affordability crisis and his commitment to serving all New Yorkers. “In that spirit, I support him and the entire citywide Democratic ticket in the general election,” Jeffries stated, signaling a push for party unity as early voting begins.

    Navigating Party Dynamics

This endorsement represents a delicate balancing act for Jeffries. While some Democrats see Mamdani’s rise as a sign of progressive energy, others worry his policies could be exploited by Republicans in the upcoming midterms. Jeffries’ decision to back Mamdani, a 34-year-old state assemblyman, could be seen as a strategic move to consolidate the party’s base.

Mamdani welcomed the endorsement, viewing it as validation for his campaign’s mission to shift away from “the politics of big money and small ideas.” This backing also serves to undercut former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who is running as a third-party candidate and reportedly lobbied Jeffries to withhold his support.

    Moderation and Safety

In recent weeks, Mamdani has worked to moderate his public image, addressing past controversial remarks and clarifying his stance on Israel. Notably, he pledged to retain Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch if elected, a move Jeffries specifically praised. “Assemblyman Mamdani has promised to focus on keeping every New Yorker safe, including the Jewish community that has confronted a startling rise in antisemitic incidents as well as Black and Latino neighborhoods that have battled deadly gun violence for years,” Jeffries added.

With polls showing Mamdani in the lead as Election Day approaches, Jeffries’ endorsement might signal a broader trend: the Democratic establishment embracing the party’s left wing for the sake of unity. However, the race isn’t without its counter-moves. Mayor Eric Adams, who previously had a public feud with Cuomo, has surprisingly announced his intention to endorse the former governor and campaign alongside him to challenge Mamdani’s growing momentum.

  • Zohran Mamdani Faces Backlash Over Dipset Fandom

New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani is finding himself in the crosshairs of critics who are targeting his well-documented love for the iconic hip-hop group, The Diplomats, also known as Dipset. The controversy centers around lyrics from their 2003 album, ‘Diplomatic Immunity,’ which some interpret as glorifying the September 11th attacks.

    The Controversy Unpacked

The criticism gained traction following a piece by Jerry Dunleavy of Just The News. The report highlights instances where Dipset members referred to themselves as the “Dipset Taliban,” “Harlem’s own Taliban,” and “Harlem’s Al-Qaeda.” Furthermore, the album reportedly contains references to the Twin Towers. This has led to accusations that the group worshipped terrorist organizations and glorified the tragic events of 9/11.

Mamdani, who has openly shared his appreciation for New York hip-hop culture, posted a picture of Dipset members Cam’ron and Juelz Santana on X (formerly Twitter) in July 2024, celebrating the Fourth of July. This post, combined with the group’s controversial lyrics, has fueled the current backlash.

    Supporters Rally Behind Mamdani

However, the criticism hasn’t gone unanswered. Many fans and supporters have taken to social media to defend Mamdani. They argue that his appreciation for Dipset is simply a reflection of his identity as a New Yorker and his understanding of the city’s vibrant hip-hop scene. One user on X commented, “Zohran listening to Dipset is just more proof he is a real New Yorker.”

Another supporter added, “Omfg your talking about the Diplomats…. Only thing Mamdani is guilty of is being a New Yorker.” This sentiment suggests that embracing local culture, even with its complexities, is a sign of authenticity for a mayoral candidate.

    Mamdani’s Broader Political Stance

This isn’t the first time Mamdani’s ties to hip-hop have been a topic of discussion during his campaign. Earlier in his political journey, he released his own hip-hop songs, which have gained traction online. He also recently attended the Wu-Tang Clan’s final show at Madison Square Garden, further cementing his connection to the genre.

Notably, Mamdani has also been vocal in condemning political violence. In the wake of Charlie Kirk’s recent assassination, Mamdani expressed his horror, stating, “Political violence has no place in our country.” While some supporters praised his professionalism and measured response, others urged him to take a stronger stance, particularly given Kirk’s past rhetoric.

  • Adams Slams Mamdani on Prostitution Decrim

The debate over decriminalizing prostitution in New York City has sparked a sharp exchange between Mayor Eric Adams and mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani. Adams, a self-proclaimed man of faith, directly challenged Mamdani’s stance, questioning how his religious beliefs align with supporting the legalization of sex work.

Adams Questions Mamdani’s Faith and Stance

During a press conference on Sunday, Mayor Adams expressed his bewilderment at Mamdani’s position. “I don’t know what Quran he is reading,” Adams stated, drawing a parallel to his own religious convictions. “It’s not in my Bible. As a man who said he is of faith, I don’t quite understand what religion supports prostitution.”

Adams, who is a devout Muslim, emphasized his belief that religious texts do not condone women selling their bodies. He voiced concern that Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist and former Queens Assemblyman, might be overlooking the serious issue of sex trafficking that he believes is intrinsically linked to prostitution.

Concerns Over Public Safety and Sex Trafficking

The Mayor argued that advocating for the legalization of sex work runs counter to efforts to reduce crime and protect vulnerable individuals. “We are trying to bring down crime and he is talking about legalizing sex work,” Adams pointed out. He firmly believes that no one should be forced into selling their bodies on the streets, regardless of the circumstances.

Adams suggested that Mamdani’s past support for legislation to legalize sex work, even if he’s been quieter on the campaign trail, could indicate future policy directions if elected. He stressed that such a move would not benefit women who are coerced into sex work.

    Mamdani’s Campaign Responds

In response to Mayor Adams’ criticisms, a spokesperson for Zohran Mamdani’s campaign fired back, shifting the focus to the Mayor’s own actions. The spokesperson stated, “Mayor Adams’ reckless budget cut over $3 million in funding from Safe Horizon… Zohran will prioritize genuine public safety for all.”

This exchange highlights a significant policy difference between the two political figures as the mayoral race heats up. The debate touches on complex issues of public safety, religious values, and the best approach to addressing sex work in New York City.
